19th-ranked Utes Too Much for Vikings

Box Score (PDF)

OREM, Utah —
The 19th-ranked Utah Utes proved too much for a young Portland State volleyball team Friday night, as the unbeaten Utes swept the Vikings, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20, at the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Invitational.

The loss drops the Vikings to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 on the day after host Utah Valley came back to beat the Vikings, 3-2, earlier in the day. Utah, meanwhile, improved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 on the day, having won against previously unbeaten UC Davis in the first match of the tournament.

The Vikings played their best set in the third, coming back from a 19-8 deficit to get within five at 20-15 with a 7-1 run. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Parker Webb tallied two kills and a service ace in the run, while freshman libero Ellie Snook added two service aces of her own. Webb recorded five kills in the third set alone, accounting for more than half of her team-leading nine kills in the match.

The Vikings also played level with the Utes early in the first set, as they were within two at 11-9 when the Utes started to distance themselves. Webb, again, had three of the Vikings' first seven kills of the match, while senior outside hitter Toni McDougald had two of the other four.

Utah closed the first set on a 14-4 run, and then opened an 11-2 lead early in the second that they carried the rest of the way.

Besides Webb, McDougald recorded seven kills and six digs against the Utes, a few hours after posting 16 kills and 14 digs against Utah Valley for her first double-double of the season earlier in the day.

Freshman setter Caroline Dragani didn't start the match, but came on to lead the Vikings with 17 assists while also recording six digs. Freshman Ellie Snook led the Vikings with 11 digs, the fifth straight match to start the season that she's had 10+ digs.

The Vikings close the La Quinta Inn & Suite by Wyndham Invitational with a final match Saturday against UC Davis. The match between the Vikings and Aggies will begin at 1 p.m. (MT) / 12 p.m. (PT).

Match Notes: The Vikings had been 6-0 against the Utes before Friday's loss, though five of those six wins came in matches played before 1984…The Vikings fall to 5-41 all time against Pac-12 opponents…The Vikings fell to 0-27 all time against ranked opponents since becoming an NCAA Division I program.
