OREM, Utah — The Portland State volleyball team closed a tough weekend in Utah with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-19) loss to UC Davis Saturday afternoon at Lockhart Arena.

The Vikings (2-4) posted their best hitting percentage of the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Invitational against the Aggies (5-2), hitting .118, but the Aggies countered with a .294 team mark to outpace the Vikings.

The first set was a back breaker for the Vikings, who fought off two set points at 24-22 and 24-23 to take their own set point at 25-24. The Aggies blocked an attack from Viking senior
Toni McDougald to save PSU's set point, however, and then followed with two more points to take the first set, 27-25.

Julia Haynie gave the Vikings a five-point lead at 14-9 with three straight service aces earlier in the set. The Aggies won seven of the next eight points to take a 16-15 lead, however, and the Vikings didn't lead again until earning their set point at 25-24.

The Vikings led late in the second set, as well, but a 6-1 UC Davis run gave the Aggies a 23-19 lead, and the Aggies closed out the set a few points later. UC Davis then took complete control of the third set with an early 7-0 run that made it 15-5.

Individually, McDougald tied for the team lead in kills (6) and digs (7), and added four block assists in the match. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Parker Webb matched McDougald with six kills while adding four digs. Freshman libero
Ellie Snook tied McDougald for the team lead in digs with six.

Freshman middle blocker Riely Daniel led the way at the net, posting six total blocks between one solo and five assists.

The Vikings now return to Portland for their home tournament next weekend. The Vikings host Nevada, CSUN and Morgan State for the Les Schwab Rose City Showdown, Sept. 13-14, at Viking Pavilion. The Vikings face Morgan State at 12:30 p.m. (PT) on Sept. 13.

Match Notes: The Vikings fell to 13-3 all time against UC Davis…All three of the Aggies' wins in the series have come in the teams' last four matches.
