Bulldogs Answer Quickly, Defeat Vikings 2-1

BOISE, Idaho – In the opening match of the weekend, the Portland State women's soccer team played a very even contest with Fresno State, falling just short in a 2-1 result on Friday.

It is the second straight 2-1 result for the Vikings who drop to 0-6-0 on the season with three losses separated by just one goal. As for the Bulldogs, they improve to 2-1-1 on the year.

Just under 10 minutes into the match, Fresno State picked up the first score of the contest as Emma Chivers controlled a pass from her teammate before finding the back of the net to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage

The remained of the first half was even for both teams as they each recorded six shots in the half with three shots on target.

Portland State moved the ball well as six different players recorded at least one shot attempt in the opening period while Enya Hernandez collected two saves to head into the break with the Vikings trailing 1-0.

The Bulldogs opened the second half much like they did the first, hitting a good look early but this time Hernandez got her hands on the ball to keep the Vikings only one score down.

In the 63rd minute, the Vikings evened the match as Diamond Quinn found Sienna Higinbotham for an open shot, sinking her second goal of the season. Higinbotham led Portland State with three shots while she and Liz Hansen each recorded two shots on goal.

It wasn't tied for long as Fresno State found the lead once again, scoring moments later to go up 2-1.

Both Fresno and Portland State finished with 11 shots in the match with six landing on target for the Bulldogs and five for the Vikings.

The Vikings will return to action on Sunday as they face off against Boise State on Sept. 15 with kickoff set for 1 p.m. MT.
