MONMOUTH, Ore. — Mum(ford) was the word for the Portland State track & field team Friday night at the John Knight Twilight as junior thrower
Angela Mumford set the tone for the Vikings with a huge personal best in the shot put.
Â
Mumford placed second in the women's shot put with a personal-best throw of 43-07.25 (13.29m). Mumford's mark Friday beat her previous best by close to 18 inches, and beat her seasonal best by close to three and a half feet.
Â
Mumford moved up to sixth all time in the outdoor shot put with her mark Friday, putting her in the all-time top 10s in four different events now at Portland State.Â
Â
Alexis Buckhaults put down an event win for the Viking women earlier in the day, as she won the women's 100-meter hurdles in a seasonal-best 14.90 seconds. Buckhaults finished in 15.28 seconds in her first 100-meter hurdle race this season, which came three weeks ago at the Rich Allen Classic. Buckhaults beat that time by close to four-tenths of a second Friday, however, and came within three-hundredths of a second of her PSU best, which she set last season.
Â
Kristen O'Handley also set a new seasonal best in the 100-meter hurdles, as she cracked 15 seconds in the event for the first time in 2019 while finishing in 14.98 seconds. O'Handley followed up with a new seasonal best in the long jump, as well, as she placed second in the event with a jump of 17-04.00 (5.28m).
Â
The Vikings posted personal bests seemingly across the board in the men's and women's 1,500 meters.
Phoebe Brown shaved over nine seconds off her PSU best in the 1,500 while winning her section of the race in 5:01.11.
Alana Baldwin-Joiner ran in the same section as Brown and shaved eight seconds off her 1,500-meter personal best with a time of 5:10.20.
Â
Twin brothers Erik and
Andy Solano also set personal or PSU bests in the men's 1,500 meters.
Erik Solano shaved five seconds off his PSU best with a time of 4:11.59, while his brother
Andy Solano set an overall personal best with his finish in 4:13.54.
Â
Savanna Milroy set a new personal best in the women's javelin, the second time out of three meets this season that she's set a new best in the event. Milroy made her biggest strides in the javelin Friday, as she improved her best in the event by more than 16 feet with a throw of 111-08 (34.05m).
Â
Taylor Matsuzaki fell an inch short of her personal best in the javelin, as she finished with a best throw of 113-04 (34.56m).
Megan Cornett led the group of the Vikings in the women's javelin for the third straight meet, as she placed third overall with a throw of 126-07 (38.59m).
Â
Outside of the personal bests,
Braden Masanga won the men's pole vault with a clearance of 14-03.25 (4.35m).
Â
Freshman
Linnaea Kavulich ran her first 800-meter race as a Viking, a week after she moved up to third all time in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase while competing at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Kavulich placed second in her first collegiate 800, finishing in 2:21.22 to place just over two-tenths of a second back of Corban's Sydney Nichol.
Â
Men's middle-distance runners
Chase Lovercheck and
Luke Ramirez competed a step down from their normal distances Friday, with Lovercheck running the 400 while Ramirez ran the 800. Lovercheck, who won the 800 meters in a new personal-best 1:56.33 at last week's Pacific Open, finished his first-collegiate 400 meters in 51.34 seconds. Ramirez, who set the fastest 1,500-meter time by a Viking freshman since 2003 while finishing in 3:56.34 last week, placed fifth in his first collegiate 800-meter race with a time of 1:59.71.
Â
Jayson Maule lowered his PSU best in the 800 meters by close to two full seconds while finishing in 2:01.85.
Â
The Vikings split the squad again next weekend as they compete at the Jay Hammer Invitational, hosted by Saint Martin's University, in Lacey, Wash., and the Pacific Luau Invitational, hosted by Pacific (Ore.) University, in Forest Grove, Ore. Both meets will take place next Saturday, April 13.Â
