Head Coach Toby Krauel and the Portland State men's tennis team sure know how to make a statement. After entering the final weekend of conference play on a three-match losing streak, the Vikings responded with a pair of emphatic wins this weekend to head into the conference tournament red hot.
The Vikings (12-7/6-4 BSC) picked up another program first on Sunday, beating Weber State 5-2 for the first time in 17 tries to keep the momentum rolling into Phoenix next weekend. Portland State had already clinched the No. 4 seed at the conference tournament - the highest-ever Big Sky finish by PSU - but didn't let that stop them from chasing more history in the season finale. This is tied for the second-most wins in a single season by Portland State.
Portland State will take on No. 5 Montana, who upset No. 2 Southern Utah on Sunday to reach the tournament - in the first round.
The strong doubles play that has paced the Vikings out of the gates all season was present yet again against Weber State. Tommy Edwards and Avery West won big at No. 1, 6-1, for the first point of the day. Then Matteo Fortini and Lucas Castelo Branco clinched the point and made a little history in the process.
The pairing won 7-6 at No. 2, the ninth win of the season for them. The win brings them into a tie as the best No. 2 team in Portland State history. Edwards/West already holds the record at No. 1 and Bukhari/Roberts does at No. 2, which means that when Portland State takes the courts in Phoenix, they will do so with the best team in program history at all three lines.
The Vikings then clinched the match by taking the top four lines of the singles competition.
Matteo Fortini won his 13th match of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1. Fortini already has the third most career wins by a No. 1 player. He is also tied for fourth for single-season wins at any line with 13.
Tommy Edwards won again 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, bringing his season total to 15 wins. He is now tied with Chris Rice, who won 15 matches in 2009, for the second-best season in program history.
Lucas Castelo Branco cruised to a win at No. 2 as well for the Vikings. He didn't lose a single game and his opponent retired in the second set with Castelo Branco up 4-0. He also climbs up to a tie for sixth in program history with 12 wins this season. He stands alone for best single season at No. 2 with his 10th win.
Nikola Dimitrijevic also bounced back after some struggles recently. He won 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7) to get the fifth point of the day for the Vikings. Weber State would go on to win at both No. 5 and 6 for the final 5-2 score.
