TORRANCE, Calif. — Actors go to Los Angeles to try and make it in Hollywood.
Sarah Medved goes to LA to make it into the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
Â
A year after Medved made the NCAA West Prelims following a school record-breaking performance in the steeplechase at the 2018 Mt. SAC Relays, Medved ran another time that should qualify for the NCAA West Prelims in her return to the meet. Medved, who became the first Viking to ever qualify in the steeplechase last season, finished in 10:23.36 Friday night at Murdock Stadium – less than two seconds behind the school record she set at 10:21.56 last season.
Â
There are no guaranteed qualifying standards for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, as the fields are instead made up of the top 48 athletes in each individual event by the second weekend of May. Consequently, the time needed to qualify fluctuates from year to year, but Medved's time Friday was a full nine seconds better than last year's final qualifying time of 10:32.47. Additionally, the final qualifying time in 2017 was 10:29.13, close to six seconds slower than Medved's time Friday.
Â
Besides the likely NCAA West Prelims qualification, Medved also reasserted herself atop the Big Sky rankings in the steeplechase with her time Friday. Medved, who became the Vikings' first Big Sky champion in the steeplechase last season, beat two different runners from Montana State in Anna French and Patricia Carlson. Medved out-kicked Carlson for the Big Sky title last season, but it was French who challenged Medved more Friday as she finished in 10:25.96, two and a half seconds behind Medved. Southern Utah's Morgan Porcaro had led the Big Sky in the steeplechase coming into the weekend, after she finished in 10:35.39 at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic on March 28.
Â
Medved placed second in her heat of the steeplechase Friday, and was the top collegiate runner in the section as Christine Thorn of the Roots Running Project won their heat in 10:19.87. Medved finished as the fifth U.S. collegian overall in the steeplechase, behind Akron's Mackenzie Andrews (10:12.72), Air Force's Lindsey Blanks (10:14.77), and Ole Miss' Lisa Vogelgesang (10:19.35) and Madeleine King (10:22.37).

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Delaney White and
Drew Seidel each set personal bests in the 5,000 meters as the lone Vikings at the Beach Invitational Friday at Jack Rose Track.
Â
White opened the day with a 19-second improvement in the women's 5k, as she crushed the personal best she set three weeks ago at the Mike Fanelli Classic while finishing in 18:05.69 Friday.
Â
Seidel's personal best came by a narrower margin, as he shaved half a second off the time he set at the L&C Spring Break Open at the beginning of the season. Seidel finished in 15:13.23 Friday, just under his time of 15:13.80 at the L&C meet.
