AZUSA, Calif. — Sophomore
Kristen O'Handley went 3-for-3 in heptathlon bests Thursday at the Bryan Clay Invitational, increasing her personal best in the heptathlon by close to 300 points and leading the Portland State track & field team across three meets in the LA area as a result.
Â
O'Handley placed 10th in Group 3 of the heptathlon with 4,871 points, 293 points better than her previous best score of 4,578 points, which came at last season's Big Sky Outdoor Championships. O'Handley's score also moved her up to fifth all time in the heptathlon at Portland State, and gave her the best heptathlon score by a Viking since
Joenisha Vinson set the school record with a score of 5,563 points in 2013.
Â
O'Handley saved her best for last as she crushed her personal best in the closing 800 meters. O'Handley finished the 800 in 2:20.49, the fastest time by a Viking in the heptathlon 800 meters since multi-event records date back through the 2004 season. O'Handley's previous best in the 800 was 2:29.83, meaning she shaved more than nine seconds off her best time Thursday.
Â
O'Handley was already on pace for a new personal-best score going into the 800 meters, thanks to a pair of heptathlon bests in the long jump and javelin. O'Handley beat her previous best in the long jump by three-quarters of an inch, opening the day with a mark of 17-01.25 (5.21m). O'Handley followed with a 33-foot heptathlon best in the javelin, finishing with a best throw of 94-04 (28.76m).
Â
Besides O'Handley, freshman
Phoebe Jacques narrowly missed a mark that would have qualified her for the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships. Jacques was attempting to join teammate
Ian Vickstrom at the junior outdoor meet, after Vickstrom qualified in the men's 10,000 meters Wednesday night. Jacques finished the women's 5,000 meters in 17:31.48, setting a 30-second personal best in the event, but also putting her just over the 17:30 needed to qualify in the 5k.Â
Â
Freshman
Josh Snyder had also hoped to qualify for junior outdoor meet in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, but finished well behind the 9:32 benchmark with a time of 10:09.74.
Â
Redshirt junior
Kaila Gibson shaved over five seconds off her seasonal best in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:52.79.
Â
Donté Robinson teased a possible qualifying mark for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the decathlon, but a no-height in the pole vault ended all hopes in the eighth event of the competition.
Â
Robinson set a personal best with a throw of 125-00 (38.12m) in the discus, his fifth personal best through the first seven events of the decathlon. That gave Robinson 5,329 points to that point of the competition, putting him ahead of personal-best pace going into the pole vault.
Â
The no-height ended all hopes of a national qualifying or school-record mark, though Robinson still finished well in the javelin and 1,500 meters. Robinson finished with a throw of 178-07 (54.44m) in the javelin, and then capped the decathlon with his second-fastest time ever in the 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:34.87.
Â
Robinson still finished with 6,697 points despite no-heighting in the pole vault. If Robinson had matched his personal best in the pole vault, he would have set a 124-point personal best with a score of 7,431 points Thursday.
Â
Robinson will get another chance at a possible national qualifying mark at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, however, where he will go in as the defending decathlon champion.
