Lindsey's Big Day Not Enough as Vikings Lose in Missoula

Portland State built an early lead in the series finale against Montana on Sunday morning, but the offensive firepower from Montana proved to be the determining factor in a 7-4 win by the Grizzlies. The loss seals a series sweep for the Vikings (13-24/2-6 BSC), who are still winless away from home in conference play.

The Vikings had a heroic performance from Darian Lindsey, who has been setting the world on fire in recent weeks. After batting .692 in three games last weekend, Lindsey put together another solid three-game set. On Sunday she hit a pair of home runs and had three RBIs, providing half the hits and three-quarters of the Viking runs. For the record, she hit .455 against the Grizzlies with two homers, two doubles and three RBIs.

The game is the second two-home run game in the last two weeks for the Vikings. Last week against Santa Clara, Alexis Morrison hit a pair of dingers in a single game.

Lindsey started the game off with a bang, ripping a leadoff home run in the first at-bat of the game. It was the first leadoff homer of the season for the Vikings, who had not hit a home run in the opening game to date.

The Vikings had a chance to set the tone early, but left the bases loaded to end the inning. Still, the offense continued to click into the second inning. Ashlyn Monroe drew a walk to lead off the inning and the top of the order came back around. Lindsey tallied another RBI, knocking a double down the left field line to bring Monroe home.

She moved to third on a Grizzly error and then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Sala Pedebone, giving the Vikings the 3-0 lead. Montana pulled starter Michaela Hood after the second inning, but Colleen Driscoll came through with an impressive relief performance.

Montana finally found an answer in the bottom of the third inning. Big innings cost the Vikings during Saturday's doubleheader and once again on Sunday. The Grizzlies scored four runs on four hits, chasing starter Serafine Parrish from the game in the process of taking the 4-3 lead.

The Grizzlies added an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and a pair of earned runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-3. All the while, Driscoll had control inside the circle. Portland State went hitless over the three middle innings. They ended a hitless streak in the sixth with a Tayler Gunesch bunt single, but they couldn't push a run home.

Lindsey led off the seventh inning, again smashing a home run into left center, cutting the lead to 7-4 in an attempt to start a late rally. But Driscoll remained in control and retired the next three Viking batters for the win.

All told, Lindsey finished with 10 total bases, the most in a single game by a Viking player this season. She went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Pedebone finished 1-for-3 with an RBI while Gunesch and Kaela Morrow had the other two Viking hits.

Parrish is credited with the loss after throwing two innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies also scored two unearned runs against Parrish in the opening innings. Katie Schroeder came on in relief, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) in four innings.

Portland State's midweek game against Corban has been canceled, meaning they won't return to action until Apr. 19 when they take on Southern Utah in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Gordon Faber Complex in Hillsboro.
