Vikings Drop Pair of Heartbreakers Against Idaho State

Portland State suffered heartbreak times two in Pocatello on Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of Big Sky Conference games each by just one run. After stellar pitching performances from both sides in game one, the offenses exploded in the second. In both, however, the Vikings came up a run short. The heartbreak, unfortunately, isn't new for the Vikings, who have now lost eight games this season by one run.

Game One - Idaho State 2, Portland State 1 (8 innings)

The Vikings didn't get a hit until the seventh inning, but they came up big in the top half of that frame to help back up a fantastic start from Katie Schroeder. In the first Big Sky game of the year for both teams, it took the bats a while to get going while the pitching staffs and defenses controlled the game.

Bengals pitcher Autumn Pease was unhittable for much of the game, allowing just single baserunner, which came on a walk, through the first six innings. Schroeder and the Viking defense kept PSU in the game, getting out of a two-on jam in the second inning with a groundout to second base.

Idaho State got a runner to third base in the third inning as well, but Schroeder did well to force an out on the next at-bat to once again strang Bengal runners on base. She faced her biggest jam of the day in the fifth inning, when a two-out walk loaded up the bases.

Schroeder held her ground, striking out the next batter and again keeping the game scoreless after five innings. But in the sixth the Bengals would break through on a solo home run by Aubrey Creekmore that put the hosts up 1-0.

Backed against the wall and still hitless on the day, the Vikings answered the call. Jessica Flanagan led off the top of the seventh with a single into centerfield to end Pease's no-hit bid. A sacrifice bunt by Sala Pedebone moved her to second. Kaela Morrow then came through with a clutch two-out double into right field to score Flanagan and tie the game at 1-all.

The Bengals went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, and the game went into extra innings.

Once again a leadoff single, this time by Alexis Morrison, followed by a sacrifice bunt put a Viking runner on second with just one out. This time, however, the Vikings couldn't bring her home and the game went to the home half of the eighth, where Serafine Parrish replaced Schroeder inside the circle.

A fielding error put a runner on and this time the Bengals went to the sac bunt to advance her to second. A single on the next at bat brought the game-winning run home and Idaho State took the opener 2-1.

Schroeder threw seven innings, allowing seven hits and just one earned run in a no decision. She also struck out three and allowed just one walk. Morrow finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the offense.

Game Two - Idaho State 7, Portland State 6

One big inning from the Bengals - a six-run second inning explosion - was enough to withstand a Viking comeback in the second game when both offenses saw a 180 degree turnaround from the opener.

Alyssa Burk started for the Vikings, but got into some trouble in the bottom of the second inning. Idaho State recorded three hits but were able to get six runs, highlighted by a grand slam, across to build a big early lead.

Portland State began to chip its way back in the top of the third. Flanagan ripped a two-out single through the left side to get on base and Pedebone brought her home with a double into right center to cut the lead to 6-1.

The comeback continued in the top of the fourth, when Portland State pushed three more runs across. Morrow led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Morrison followed that up with another double into left to score Morrow. Then with two outs, Riley Casper launched a two-run homer, her second of the season. The lead had been cut down, but the Vikings couldn't score over the next few innings and the Bengals added one in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-4.

The Vikings, in another tight spot, nearly rallied to force extra innings again. With two outs in the inning Pedebone started things with a single to first base. Then Rachel Menlove ripped her third home run of the season into center to cut the lead to just one run.

Morrow followed it up with a single, but on the next at bat, a Morrison single, she was thrown out on her way to third base to end the game 7-6.

Burk picked up the loss and fell to 1-5 on the year. Parrish came on in relief, throwing four and two thirds innings and allowing just a single run off of four hits.

Offensively, seven different Vikings picked up at least one hit. There were also three multi-hit games, led by Pedebone's 3-for-4 performance. Casper and Menlove each finished with two RBIs.

The Vikings will hope to rebound tomorrow against the same Bengal team. The final game of the series will begin at 11:00 a.m. PT.
