Jacinta Milenkoski made her much awaited debut for the Portland State women's tennis team on Friday, but the Vikings were unable to get their first win of the season on the road against Idaho State. The Bengals won 5-2, dropping PSU to 0-4 on the season.
Milenkoski, who had not played yet this season because of a wrist injury, jumped right back into match play by playing at the top of the Viking lineup. While rust is expected after sitting out for nearly six months, Milenkoski showed why Head Coach Jay Sterling is so excited for the potential of this team.
She fell in a close and competitive match, losing 4-6, 6-3, 5-7. As she returns to form, her presence at the top of the lineup could pay huge dividends for the Vikings. They picked up two wins lower in the lineup and had a couple of near misses as well.
Eszter Zador continued her hot start to the season, winning her third straight singles match to stay perfect on the year. She won in straight sets at No. 4, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Zador has settled into her role in the middle of the lineup perfectly, helping the Vikings stay in every match this year.
Nina Nikitovic, who slid down to play No. 3 after being in the second spot in all of her previous matches, kept her momentum following a win against Portland last weekend. Nikitovic picked up a big 5-7, 7-2, 7-6 (4) comeback win for the second Viking point.
In doubles, Idaho State clinched the point with a 6-1 win at No. 2 and a 6-4 win at No. 3. The Vikings had a 4-3 lead at No. 1 doubles (Milenkoski/Nikitovic) when the point was clinched.
The Vikings put up a fight in the singles matches, but weren't able to swing the match back in their favor. Lotti Meszaros, Alli Valk and Taylor Rees all fell in straight sets.
Meszaros, at No. 2, dropped her match 6-2, 6-3. Valk fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Ress lost 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Vikings remain on the road and have a quick turnaround before taking on Weber State tomorrow.
