Vikings Even Record with a Pair of Wins Saturday

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After dropping a pair of games Friday, the Portland State softball team bounced back in a big way with a pair of wins to even its record at 2-2, its best start since 2015. The Vikings opened the day with a 6-4 win over Cal Poly before defeating host San Diego by a score of 3-2.

Senior Kaela Morrow continues to swing the bat well with two more multi-hit games, making it four in four games. She went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI against Cal Poly before going 2-for-4 with two more RBIs against San Diego. She is hitting .600 on the year with a team-best four RBIs.

Junior Darian Lindsey went 4-for-6 on the day, including a triple, and score three of the team's nine runs. She is second on the team with a .455 average through four games.

Portland State took advantage of a pair of Cal Poly mistakes to plate two runs in the top of the first in game one. The Mustangs countered with an unearned run of their own off PSU starter Serafine Parrish to make it a 2-1 game at the end of the first.

The Vikings added another unearned run in the second before adding in an earned run in the top of the third on a Morrow RBI double to make it a 4-1 game. Cal Poly plated a run in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth to pull within one at 4-3.

Each team added a run in the fifth inning before the Vikings added another unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it a two-run game.

After giving up a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, third-year Head Coach Meadow McWhorter made the call to the bullpen to bring in Katie Schroeder. After giving up a walk, Schroeder allowed just one more base runner over the final three innings of the game to secure the Vikings' first win of the year and her first save of the year.

Parrish earned her first win after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits over four innings pitched.

The second game of the day remained scoreless until the Vikings plated a run in the top of the fourth to go up 1-0. Lindsey tripled to right field before coming in on a Morrow single up the middle.

The Vikings added a run in the sixth on an Ashley Doyle RBI double down the left field line. Jessica Flanagan extended her hitting streak to 11 games, dating back to last year, with a leadoff single in the top of the seventh. Two batters later, Morrow drove her in for a much-needed insurance run to make it a 3-0 game.

Senior Alyssa Burk took a shutout into the seventh inning. The Toreros loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. A sacrifice fly scored the first run off Burk. The next batter doubled in another run to make it 3-2 with two outs. Burk induced a pop out to third on the first pitch to the next batter to secure the Vikings' one-run victory.

Burk allowed just two earned on seven hits over the complete game. She walked four and struck out three for her first win of the season.

The Vikings have two more games to close out the first weekend of the season. They will take on the Marshall Herd on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. PT before facing Cal Poly for a second time at 11:30 a.m.
