Nikitovic Wins Against Former School in Viking Loss

Nina Nikitovic picked up her first career win as a member of the Portland State women's tennis team on Friday afternoon, and it came against Portland, Nikitovic's former school.

The Pilots won the overall match 6-1, dropping the Vikings to 0-3 on the season.

"This was a big match for Nina and she played hard," Head Coach Jay Sterling said. "We wanted to play hard for her and I think we did that so I'm happy."

Nikitovic, playing at No. 2, came out absolutely on fire, controlling the match from the opening serve. She cruised in the first set to a 6-1 win. Portland's Raphaelle LeBlanc answered back with a good fight in the second set, but Nikitovic would not be stopped. She played well down the stretch, winning the second set 6-3 for her first win.

She is now 1-2 on the year with all three matches coming at No. 2 singles.

The Vikings have been battling injuries this year but were also a healthy player down against the Pilots. Eszter Zador, who is 2-0 on the season, missed the match to attend class. PSU then played the six healthy players on its roster, forcing three players to move up a spot in the draw.

Nikitovic would be the only Viking player to win a set on the day. The Vikings also dropped all three doubles matches to Portland, which improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 against Big Sky opponents with the win.

MATCH NOTES: The Vikings now trail the all-time series to Portland 0-18 … Nina Nikitovic picked up her first career win in the match.
