BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Playing in one of the cathedrals of college basketball, the Portland State men's basketball team equated itself well despite falling 85-74 to Indiana Saturday in the Hoosiers' Assembly Hall.
Â
No player looked like they belonged on the court more than the Vikings' Holland "Boo Boo" Woods, who scored 20Â of his 27Â points in the second half. Woods hit four three-pointers in a span of four minutes early in the second half, keeping the Vikings (1-1) in the game just as the Hoosiers (2-0) started to extend their lead.
Â
Woods' first three-pointer came right after the Hoosiers took their biggest lead of the game to that point at 53-37 with 15:47 remaining. Woods then hit three three-pointers on three consecutive Viking possessions, the last of which made it a seven-point game at 58-51 with 12:22 left.
Â
Alonzo Walker followed with a jumper out of the under-12 media timeout, bringing the Vikings back within five at 58-53.
Â
The Vikings went cold from that point on, however, hitting only two field goals in an eight-minute stretch following Walker's jumper. That allowed the Hoosiers to build their lead back up to as many as 18 points while closing out the game with relative ease. A technical foul on the Vikings helped shift momentum back to the Hoosiers soon after the Vikings got back within five.
Â
The Hoosiers controlled the game in the paint, finishing with big advantages over the Vikings in rebounds, second-chance points and points in the paint. The Hoosiers out-rebounded the Vikings 41-to-24, including a 16-to-7Â advantage on the offensive glass. That led to a 23-12Â advantage in second-chance points for the Hoosiers, as well as a 52-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Â
The Vikings countered with their outside shooting, finishing 8-of-16Â from beyond the arc where the Hoosiers finished just 3-of-14. Woods and
Matt Hauser each finished with four shots from beyond the arc, and led the Vikings with 27 and 21 points, respectively.
Â
Hauser made his first three shots from beyond the arc as he kept the Vikings in the game early. Hauser's first three-pointer gave the Vikings their lone lead of the game at 5-4, while his second brought the Vikings back within four at 14-10 after Indiana used a 10-2 run to take a seven-point lead. Hauser's third three-pointer came later in the first half, bringing the Vikings back within five at 34-29 with 4:38 left before the break.
Â
The Hoosiers, who missed their first four shots from beyond arc, finally hit a shot from distance with 3:11 left to go in the first half. A second Indiana three-pointer just over a minute later gave the Hoosiers their largest lead of the game to that point at 42-31, and the Hoosiers maintained at least an eight-point lead from there until Woods got hot from deep in the second half.
Â
Early foul trouble hurt the Vikings down low, as the team's starting frontcourt of Walker and
Sal Nuhu each picked up two or more fouls in the first half. Walker committed two fouls in the opening minutes of the game, then picked up a third with over 12 minutes left in the half. Nuhu, meanwhile, received his second foul with 10:33 remaining in the half, but managed to finish out the period without picking up a third.
Â
The foul trouble down low allowed Indiana to build its advantage on the boards.
Rashaad Goolsby played well in spell of Walker, but still only finished with five rebounds to lead the Vikings. Nuhu overcame the early foul trouble to lead all players with three blocks in the game, and affected a lot more.
Â
Chris Whitaker was the only Vikings beside Woods and Hauser in double figures, as he finished with 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting to go with three rebounds. Goolsby finished with seven points while going 3-of-6 from the floor, and chipped in three steals to go with his team-high five rebounds. Walker added six points despite being in foul trouble throughout the game.
Â
The Vikings remain on the road next weekend, when they travel to the island of Oahu for a game against the University of Hawaii next Friday at 10 p.m. (PT). The Vikings next play at home on Nov. 20, when they'll host cross-town rival University of Portland at Viking Pavilion.
