Honolulu, HI – Drew Stansberry was the difference in an otherwise close battle for 40 minutes, leading Hawai'i to an 83-75 win over Portland State at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors' senior guard scored a career-high 28 points, hitting 8-15 from the field, 6-7 from three-point range and 6-6 at the free throw line. Stansberry's performance, and a significant shooting disparity in the second half, led Hawai'i to the victory.

The Rainbow Warriors led by just two at halftime, but hit 15-29 from the field (.517) in the second half, including 6-12 from distance. The Vikings were only 12-37 from the field (.324) after halftime.

Hawai'i improved to 3-1 on the season with the win. Portland State dropped to 1-2.

Stansberry, coming off back-to-back 20-point games, was ready for the Vikings. He hit his first six three-pointers against PSU, had 14 by halftime, and 14 more in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Vikings defensive pressure created some drama for Hawai'i and kept PSU in the game. The Vikings forced 18 turnovers and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds. That resulted in 10 more shot attempts and seven more free throws in the game. But Hawai'i's overall performance was more efficient. The Rainbow Warriors made 30-59 shots from the field (.508) and 11-20 from three-point range (.550). PSU was 27-69 (.391) and 5-17 (.294).

Hawai'i led for almost the entire game, but only by single digits. The game was tied at 40 early in the second, but the Rainbow Warriors got the lead back.

A three-pointer by Samuta Avea with 7:24 to play gave Hawai'i a 75-65 lead, its largest of the game. PSU was able to cut it back to six points quickly. Down the stretch though, PSU could not convert, scoring only four points in the final five minutes.

Senior guard
Matt Hauser led four Vikings in double figures with 18 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Holland Woods had 12 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists for the Vikings.

Chris Whitaker each had 10 points.
Alonzo Walker pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Vikings.

In addition to Stansberry's big game, Zigmars Raimo had 10 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists for Hawai'i. Drew Buggs scored 13 points and handed off five assists, hitting 6-8 from the field.

GAME NOTES: With five steals,
Holland Woods moves up to seventh all-time at Portland State with 109 in his career… Portland State and Hawai'i were playing for the first time in the first time in 40 years. UH leads the all-time series, 6-1, with all six wins coming on the islands… this was the second road game in a stretch of six out of seven on the road for PSU… the Vikings come home to host the University of Portland next Wednesday night at the Viking Pavilion.
