CORVALLIS, Ore. — Portland State head cross country coach
David Hepburn has been clear all season: this is the deepest men's cross country team in program history. That was proven a week ago, when the Viking men set a program-best finish at the Big Sky Championships, and it was proven again Saturday, when a completely different set of runners led the men to the program's first-ever win at the Beaver Classic.
Â
The Viking men ran placed four runners in the top 10 of the meet, while their fifth runner finished 11th overall. The Viking women also had a top-10 finisher in
Carissa Rodriguez, who was the lone Viking competing on the women's side.
Â
Andrew Stafford led the Viking men with a fourth-place overall finish, the first time in his Viking career that he had placed in the top 10, let alone the top five. Stafford, who was making his first appearance of the season in a Viking singlet, finished the 8k course at the Crystal Lake Sports Fields in 25:44.49.
Â
Cody Jones, a junior captain for the men's team, matched his highest finish ever at sixth overall in 26:27.42. Jones also placed sixth at the 2018 Beaver Classic, but beat his time from a season ago while shaving over 10 seconds off his 8k personal best.
Â
Twin brothers Erik and
Andy Solano followed Jones with the first top-10 finishes of their career.
Erik Solano placed seventh in 26:35.72, while
Andy Solano followed at ninth in 26:44.41.
Â
Mitchell Tolander, making his first appearance for the Viking cross country team in two years on the Park Blocks, closed out the team's scoring while placing 11th in 27:22.81.
Â
Liam Jemison and
Nigel Leonis also competed for the Vikings, finishing 13th and 18th overall, respectively, in times of 27:36.30 and 28:20.65.
Â
Rodriguez, meanwhile, earned her first-career top-10 finish while placing 10th overall in 24:44.97 in the women's 6k.
Â
The Vikings close out the cross country season this coming Friday, as the Viking men and women head to the NCAA West Regional at Colfax Golf Course in Colfax, Wash. The Viking women run a 6k at 11:30 a.m. (PT), while the Viking men run their first 10k of the season at 12:30 p.m. (PT). The Vikings got a sneak peek at the regional course at the Cougar Classic back on Sept. 13.
