PORTLAND – The Portland State women's soccer team saw its winning streak end on Sunday as the Vikings dropped a well-fought match to Sacramento State 2-1 at Hillsboro Stadium.
Portland State falls to 4-10-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in the Big Sky Conference while the Hornets improve to 8-1-5 overall, 2-0-3 in the BSC.
Sac State opened the scoring in the 24th minute after the Vikings were unable to clear a corner kick as the ball found the foot of Ariana Nino who snuck the ball through the crowd and into the net.
Portland State a few chances in the opening period but nearly scored as the Sac State keeper misplaced a ball before Rilee Castilla turned a sent a shot just to the left of the post.
The Hornets out shot the Vikings 5-3 in the first half as they took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Despite the slow start offensively in the first half, Portland State came out firing in the second, nearly scoring as Chloe Huling sent a shot into the middle of the goal before deflecting off a defender and ending as a save.
Sac State added to their lead after sending a through ball past the last defender before Kylee Kim-Bustillos sent a shot over the keeper from just outside the box to go up 2-0 in the 62nd minute.
The Vikings continued to add pressure, tallying 11 second-half shots. PSU finally got on the board as Diamond Quinn sent a corner into the box as Sienna Higinbotham leaped to head the ball away for her fifth goal of the season. Quinn earned her second assist off the set-piece.
Castilla led the Portland State offense with five total shots while Huling added four shots with two on goal.
The Vikings finished their three-match home standing going 2-1 overall and will travel next week for a couple of key matchups as the Big Sky playoff race continues at Northern Colorado and Montana beginning Friday, Oct. 18.
