Last season, Portland State entered the Kibbie-Asui Activity Center in Moscow, Idaho and broke the hearts of the Idaho Vandals. This season, the home side remembered that result and paid Portland State back in full.
Idaho scored an early goal in the 13th minute and added three more in the second half for a dominant 4-0 victory in the Big Sky opener for both sides.
Despite giving up the early goal, the Vikings held their own in the first half. They were slightly outshot, but did control possession well in the first 45 minutes. The second half was another story altogether.
Just like in the first half, Idaho scored a quick goal in the second period of play. Bridget Daley, who also scored the opener, found the back of the net on an impressive goal from outside the box.
Portland State wasn't out of the game yet, but Daley and the Vandals didn't settle for the two-goal lead.
Soon after, Rilee Castilla received a red card that gave Idaho the 11-on-10 player advantage. Daley found her hat trick in the 63rd minute to make the lead 3-0. One minute later, Myah Merino beat Abbie Faingold, who had come to the edge of her box, to the ball and scored on a slow-roller to the back post.
It was a fairly even game on the statsheet. Idaho outshot PSU 14-11 and had one more corner. The Vandals committed 18 fouls compared to just 10 for the Vikings, but the red card significantly limited Portland State's chances to get back into the match.
The Vikings fall to 0-1 in Big Sky play. They will play defending champion Eastern Washington on Sunday in Cheney.
