After a long journey to Phoenix, Ariz. and a late start time, it would have been acceptable, almost expected, for Portland State to come out of the gates a little slowly against Grand Canyon on Thursday. Instead, Krystal de Ramos nearly made history. The senior found the end of a long ball from Morgan Matthews, took one dribble and finished around Grand Canyon's goalkeeper to put the Vikings on top.
The goal came just 67 seconds into the match, tied for the fifth fastest goal in Portland State history. The Vikings (2-4-0) were off to an incredible start, but that would be about the only thing they had to celebrate Thursday night. Grand Canyon (2-7-0) scored four unanswered goals to pick up an easy win at home and start the Vikings' road trip off on a sour note.
Even after the opening goal silenced the home crowd early, Grand Canyon maintained their energy level. It didn't take long for them to find the equalizer in the 12th minute. They then took the lead seven minutes later.
The Vikings held on until the half and nearly scored an equalizer right before the halftime buzzer. A long ball found Rilee Castilla in the box, but her shot went right at Grand Canyon goalkeeper Abby Burton.
The momentum remained in favor of Portland State coming out of halftime as Regan Russell very nearly equalized. She found some space in the box and fired a shot off into the side of the net. They didn't get many more chances and in the 62nd minute Grand Canyon extended its lead.
One minute later, the Antelopes put the match out of reach with a fourth goal.
Despite the quick start, the Portland State offense was fairly stagnant for the rest of the match. They totaled just five shots, three of them on goal, and one corner kick. Grand Canyon finished with 16 shots, half of them on goal, and five corner kicks.
The Vikings will be back in action on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT against the Missouri Tigers.
