MOSCOW, Idaho — The Viking multi-eventers are living up to the name of the complex at which they are competing.
Â
Kristen O'Handley and
Donté Robinson sit in first and second after the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively, while they along with teammate
Katie Baxter all set personal-best first-day scores at the Dan O'Brien Outdoor Track Complex – named for the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist in the decathlon who graduated from the University of Idaho.Â
Â
O'Handley leads the heptathlon field by more than 100 points, as she was the only athlete in the competition to break 3,000 points on the first day of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. O'Handley finished with 3,062 points Tuesday, 102 points more than Sacramento State's Emilia Del Hoyo, and 279 points more than she scored on the first day of the Boxer Combined Event earlier this season.
Â
O'Handley steadily moved up the overall standings throughout the day as she set heptathlon personal bests in the final three events.
Â
O'Handley opened the day in fifth place after the 100-meter hurdles, though she wasn't far off her personal best in the event with her finish in 15.10 seconds.Â
Â
O'Handley set her first heptathlon personal best of the day in the following event, the high jump, moving her up to third overall in the standings. O'Handley placed second in the high jump with a clearance of 5-04.50 – close to five inches better than the height she cleared at the Boxer Combined Event on March 27.
Â
O'Handley improved even more in the shot put, as she bettered her mark at the Boxer Combined Event by more than four and a half feet. O'Handley finished with a best mark of 33-07.50 (10.25m) in the event, and jumped one more space in the standings to second.
Â
O'Handley capped the day with her best event as she won the 200 meters in 24.80 seconds – making her the only heptathlete to crack 25 seconds in the event, and one of only four to crack 26 seconds.
Â
Baxter placed second to O'Handley in the 200 meters in 25.41 seconds, moving her up to eighth overall with 2,724 points after the first day of the competition. Baxer went 4-for-4 on personal bests throughout the day and beat her first-day total at the Boxer Combined Event by 136 points.Â
Â
Baxter's biggest improvement of the day came in the 100-meter hurdles, where she scored 62 points more than she did at the Boxer Combined Event with her finish in 15.32 seconds.
Â
Baxter also matched her personal best in the high jump with a clearance of 4-09.50 (1.46m), and beat her personal best in the shot put by more than 15 inches with a mark of 31-02 (9.50m).
Â
Robinson moved up to second in the decathlon standings after the second event of the day, the long jump, and remained there the rest of the way.
Â
Robinson set or tied his personal bests in the first four events of the day, and finished just off his personal best in the 400 meters while closing in 50.12 seconds.
Â
Robinson opened with a personal best in the 100 meters, finishing in 11.11 seconds to beat his old best by more than a tenth of a second. Robinson followed with an outdoor and decathlon personal best in the long jump, as he placed second in the event with a best jump of 22-05.00 (6.83m).
Â
Robinson bettered his personal best in the shot put by nearly three-quarters of a meter, finishing with a mark of 38-05.50 (11.72m). Robinson then cleared 6-02.75 (1.90m) on his third attempt at the height to match his personal best in the high jump.
Â
Montana State's Mason Storm – the 2016 Big Sky champion in the decathlon – leads the competition after the first day with 3,884 points, 162 points more than Robinson's total. Sacramento State's Max Jette – the 2017 Big sky champion in the decathlon – ranks fifth with 3593 points.
Â
The decathlon resumes at 10 a.m. Wednesday while the heptathlon picks up again at 10:30 a.m.
