SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Kamal-Craig Golaube and
Sarah Medved were in similar boats at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds Friday. Both were jumping obstacles in the men's 110-meter hurdles and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, but neither could get over the final obstacle and advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene.
Â
Golaube placed 43rd in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles in 14.88 seconds, while Medved placed 40th in the quarterfinals of the steeplechase in 10:35.77.
Â
Medved's time ranks off the school record of 10:21.56 she set at the Mt. SAC Relays in qualifying for the NCAA West Prelims, but still marked her fourth straight time cracking 11 minutes in the event. No Viking had ever cracked 11 minutes in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase before Medved, and Medved finished in under 11 minutes all four times she ran the steeplechase this season.
Â
Friday's result caps a record-breaking season for Medved, who twice set the school record in the steeplechase. Medved also won the Vikings' first-ever Big Sky title in the steeplechase when she raced past Montana State's Patricia Carlson after the final water jump. Additionally, Medved was the first Viking to ever qualify for the NCAA West Prelims in the men's or women's steeplechase.
Â
Golaube was only the second Viking to ever qualify in the men's 110-meter hurdles, following school record-holder Keith Gill in 2004. Golaube qualified after setting a personal best in the finals of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships with his finish in 14.34 seconds. That moved Golaube up to second all time behind Gill in the 110-meter hurdles at Portland State, and Golaube owns the school record in the indoor 60-meter hurdles.
Â
Golaube was a late addition to the NCAA West Prelims, but beat his ranking coming into the meet of 57th in the NCAA west region with his finish Friday.
Â
Friday's results end the collegiate track season for the Vikings. All three of the Vikings' West Prelim qualifiers have eligibility remaining for next season, however. Golaube will have two more years of eligibility remaining as a sophomore this season, while Medved and
Alex Cisneros, who ran in the men's 10,000 meters Thursday, have a year each remaining.
