SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A great season came to an end for Portland State distance runner
Alex Cisneros Thursday, as he placed 36th while finishing the men's 10,000 meters in 30:14.27 at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at Hornet Stadium.
Cisneros beat his ranking coming into the meet of 39th in the west, but would have needed to finish in the top 12 to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene.
Cisneros became the first Viking men's runner to ever qualify for the West Prelims in the men's 10,000 meters this season, as well as the first men's runner to qualify in any event longer than 800 meters. Cisneros qualified on the back of his school record-breaking performance at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 19. Cisneros broke a 34-year-old school record with his finish in 29:25.74 at the Mt. SAC Relays, one of three records Cisneros broke this season.
In addition to the 10,000-meter record, Cisneros also set the school records in the indoor 3,000 meters (8:16.45) and indoor 5,000 meters (14:19.95) this season. Additionally, Cisneros became the first Viking since 2005 to crack the top 10 in the outdoor 5,000 meters with his finish in 14:28.96 at the L&C Spring Break Open on March 17.
Kamal-Craig Golaube and
Sarah Medved will compete for the Vikings on the second day of the NCAA West Prelims Friday. Golaube will compete in the first round of the men's 110-meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m., while Medved will run in the quarterfinals of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9 p.m.
