LEWISTON, Idaho — Playing short handed against the three-time defending Big Sky tournament champions is never ideal, as was the case for the Portland State women's tennis team Friday, which lost 7-0 on the road against Idaho at the LCSC Tennis Center.
 
The Vikings (0-13, 0-9 Big Sky) played with five players against the Vandals (8-6, 5-1 Big Sky), forcing them to forfeit the matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Additionally, the Vandals won all five contested singles matches in straight sets, and won the match at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, to clinch the doubles point.
 
Despite the less-than-ideal circumstances, Gerda Upeniece came out and played a strong first set against Idaho's Maggie Chen at line five before losing 6-4. Chen raised her level in the second set, however, and beat Upeniece in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
 
Siena Peri and Alli Valk, meanwhile, rebounded from tough first sets to challenge in the second sets of their matches at lines one and three, respectively. Peri lost the first set of her match against Idaho's Maria Tavares, 6-1, but then came back to play a close second set before losing, 6-4. Valk dropped the first set of her match against Idaho's Laura Spataro, 6-2, but then played better in the second set before losing, 6-4.
 
The Vikings will hope to be back at full strength Sunday, when they travel to face Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash. First serve between the Vikings and Eagles will be at 11 a.m.
