TORRANCE, Calif. — Sarah Medved and
Alex Cisneros had already made history this season but made it again Thursday while setting the school records in the men's 10,000 meters and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays. What's more, Cisneros and Medved set themselves up to potentially make history again at the end of the season, as they vaulted into strong contention to become the first Vikings to qualify in their respective events for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at the end of May.
Â
Medved could become the Vikings' first-ever qualifier – man or woman – to qualify in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as she broke her own school record in the event Thursday. Medved has only run the steeplechase twice, but has broken the school record after both attempts, and did so while beating out an elite field at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Â
Medved won the college open division of the steeplechase in 10:21.56, more than 36 seconds better than her debut time of 10:58.17 on March 16, when she originally set the record at the L&C Spring Break Open. No Viking had cracked 11 minutes in the steeplechase before Medved, and her time Thursday puts her more than 50 seconds clear of the old record that Mandy Peterson set at 11:11.60 in 2003.
Â
The final qualifying time in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase last season was 10:29.13, and Medved beat that by more than seven seconds with her finish Thursday. Medved's time would rank her 12th in the NCAA west region based on results coming into the weekend, and beat the previous Big Sky-leading time of 10:22.95 that Montana State's Anna French set last week at the Triton Invitational.
Â
Medved out-kicked another Montana State runner, Patricia Carlson, for the win Thursday. Medved trailed Carlson by a second and a half going into the bell lap, but nipped her at the line to beat Carlson by seven-hundredths of a second. Paula Gil-Echevarria of Eastern Washington placed third in 10:27.41, and all three Big Sky athletes beat out runners from bigger schools like Arizona, Utah and Texas.
Â
Cisneros, meanwhile, could become the Vikings first qualifier in the men's 10,000 meters after he broke a 34-year-old school record in the event with his finish in 29:25.74. Cisneros beat Dave Henderson's old record of 29:30.04 by over four seconds, which Henderson set in 1984.
Â
The final qualifying time in the 10,000 meters last season was 29:39.95, more than 14 seconds slower than the time Cisneros ran Thursday. No Viking man has qualified regionally in an event longer than 800 meters, and Cisneros would rank 32nd in the west region based on results coming into the weekend.
Â
Cisneros had already made history coming into Thursday, as he set the school records in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters over the winter. Cisneros also became the first Viking to crack the top 10 all time in the outdoor 5,000 meters since 2005 at the L&C Spring Break Open in March, and was the first Viking since 1984 to crack 30 minutes in the 10,000 meters before setting the record Thursday.

The Vikings will conclude their regular season at the OSU High Performance meet next week, April 27-28, in Corvallis, Ore.Â

AZUSA, Calif. — Donté Robinson set his second personal best in as many attempts in the decathlon Thursday at the Bryan Clay Invitational, as he placed sixth in group three of the decathlon with a score of 6,908 points. Robinson's score beat out the personal best of 6,868 points he set at the Boxer Combined Event earlier in the season, and moved him up to fifth all time in the decathlon a Portland State – ahead of NFL player and former Viking DeShawn Shead.
Â
Robinson set decathlon personal bests in the 110-meter hurdles and javelin on the second day of the competition, and wasn't far off his personal bests in the pole vault and 1,500 meters.
Â
Robinson ran the 110-meter hurdles in 15.24 seconds to open the day, beating the PR of 15.43 seconds he set at the Boxer Combined Event earlier this season by close to two-tenths of a second.
Â
Robinson set another decathlon personal best in the javelin, as he placed second in the event with a best throw of 176-09 (53.87m). Robinson beat out his previous best in the decathlon javelin by two feet, which he again set at the Boxer Combined Event earlier this season.
Â
Robinson didn't beat out the personal best of 14-03.25 (4.35m) he set in the pole vault at the Boxer Combined Event, but came close as he cleared 13-09.25 (4.20m). Robinson also came within a second and a half of his personal best in the 1,500 meters, as he won the final event of the competition while kicking to the line in 4:32.71.
Â
Kaila Gibson shaved more than 36 seconds off her personal best in the outdoor 5,000 meters as she finished in 16:47.04. Gibson crushed her previous seasonal best in the 5,000 meters, which she set at 17:24.46 three weeks ago at the SF State Distance Carnival.
Â
Gibson's time Thursday moved her up to fifth all time in the outdoor 5,000 meters, giving her the latest in a string of historical performances this season. Gibson set the indoor school record in the 5,000 meters with her finish in 16:53.60 at the UW Invitational in January, and moved up to third all time in the indoor 3,000 meters at the UW Indoor Open. Gibson also led the Viking women at every meet during the cross country season, and entered the top 10 all time in the cross country 5k and 6k during the fall.
