Vikings Drop Doubleheader at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Portland State dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Oregon State Tuesday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers took game one 8-0 in five innings before needing a walk-off home run to take game two, 2-1.

The Vikings scattered 10 hits over the two games. JR C/DP Kaela Morrow extending her current hitting streak to seven games after hitting safely in both. She hit .500, going 3-for-6 with a run scored and her seventh home run of the season, which ended the Vikings' nine-game home run drought.

Alexxis Ponce, Riley Casper, and Darian Lindsey each tallied a pair of hits on the day.

The story of the day had to be the pitching of freshman Haley Schimmel. She closed out game one with 1 1/3 scoreless innings before throwing her first career complete game in game two. She allowed just two earned runs between the two games on eight hits. She walked one and struck out two.

Schimmel, making just her second-career start, threw two scoreless innings before Oregon State broke through with a manufactured run in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead.

Portland State stranded five runners over the first four innings before Morrow tied the game with a blast over the left field fence. It was her team-best seventh home run of the season, the most by a Viking since Brittany Hendrickson hit eight in 2015.

After giving up a run in the third, Schimmel continued to throw strikes and let her defense work behind her. She stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the fourth and then induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the fifth.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the game moved to the seventh still tied at 1-1. Lindsey singled up the middle with one out in the top half. Morrow just missed her second home run of the game with a deep fly ball to right field for the second out. The next batter grounded out to end the Vikings' half of the inning.

Schimmel left one pitch a little high to the Oregon State leadoff hitter in the bottom of the seventh and Beavers hit a walk-off home run to take game two by a final score of 2-1.

The Vikings recorded a hit in each of the first three innings of game one but were unable to string any together to start a rally.

Oregon State got on the board with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second of game one. The Beavers added four more off PSU starting pitcher Serafine Parrish in the bottom of the third before she was relieved by Schimmel.

Schimmel came on and got out of the third before throwing a scoreless fourth inning. She allowed just one hit over the final 1 1/3 innings.

Portland State went in order in each of the final two innings to drop game one 8-0 in five innings.

The Vikings hit the road once again this weekend for a three-game Big Sky Conference series at Montana. The series begins Saturday, April 21 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. MT.
