MISSOULA, Mont. — Needing a win to clinch its first-ever Big Sky tournament berth, the Portland State men's tennis team came up short against a game Montana squad Sunday, 7-0,and will instead have to await results from other matches in the coming days.
 
The Vikings can clinch a spot in the tournament as early as Monday if Southern Utah loses at home against Northern Arizona. If the Thunderbirds win that match, however, then the Vikings will have to wait until next weekend to find out their Big Sky tournament fate.
 
A win over the Grizzlies (10-5, 7-2 Big Sky) would have given the Vikings (12-9, 6-5 Big Sky) a more emphatic entry to the Big Sky tournament, but the Grizzlies came out firing Sunday.
 
The Grizzlies took the doubles point with dominant wins at lines two and three, and then swept all six singles matches.
 
Avery West and Tommy Edwards provided a bright spot for the Vikings at No. 1 doubles, as they beat the Grizzlies' Victor Casadevall and Ignacio Tejerina, 6-2. The win gives West and Edwards their 14th win of the season overall and at No. 1 doubles, giving them the single-season records in both categories. West and Edwards also set the career record for wins at No. 1 doubles with their 14th win together, and each player tied former Viking Brent Wheeler for the single-season record for wins at No. 1 doubles by an individual.
 
Edwards also played a dominant first set against Tejerina at No. 3 singles, as he bageled him, 6-0. Tejerina flipped a switch to win the second and third sets, 6-2, 6-3, however, giving him a three-set win over Edwards.
 
Nathan Boniel nearly mounted a comeback at line one, as he fell 3-1 and a set behind Montana's Yannick Schmidl. Boniel came back to force a second-set tiebreaker, but Schmidl recovered to win the breaker, 7-3, and take their match 6-1, 7-6 (3).
 
Sunday's match concludes the regular season for the Vikings, but they'll host an alumni match Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. at West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club. Should the Vikings qualify for the Big Sky tournament, the quarterfinals will begin Thursday, April 26, at the Phoenix Tennis Center in Phoenix, Ariz.
