LEWISTON, Idaho — A three-match, four-day road trip got off on the right foot for the Portland State men's tennis team Thursday, as the Vikings beat Lewis-Clark State 6-1 at the LCSC Tennis Courts.
Â
The Vikings (8-5) swept all three doubles matches against the Warriors (1-4), and won five of the six singles matches – all in straight sets.
Â
The Vikings have had two hot doubles teams of late in
Tommy Edwards and
Avery West at line one and
Nathan Boniel and
Gabe Souza at line two. Those two won again Thursday, but the Vikings added a third win in doubles as
Sam Roberts and Majeed Bukhari won 7-5 at line three.
Â
Edwards' win with West at No. 1 doubles gave the sophomore his 18th-career win at the top of the doubles lineup, tying him for third all time at Portland State. Edwards and West also moved back into the all-time lead for win percentage at No. 1 doubles, as they are now 9-4 at the top of the doubles lineup.
Â
Edwards was also the first Viking off the court in singles, beating Lewis-Clark State's William Bruchard 6-4, 6-3 at line two.
Â
Otto Holtari followed Edwards off the court with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lewis-Clark State's Luca Menezes at line three. Holtari's win at line three marked his highest win in the Vikings' lineup of the season, and gave him his team-best ninth overall singles win of the season.
Â
Boniel ranks right behind Holtari with eight wins this season after beating Lewis-Clark State's Ignacio Salom 7-6, 6-2 at line one. Boniel has won three of his last four matches at line one, with his only loss coming against the University of Washington's Mitch Stewart, who came into the match ranked 57th nationally in singles.
Â
Souza followed Boniel with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lewis-Clark State's Roberto Salazar at line six, his second singles win of the season for the Vikings.
Â
Bukhari capped the day for the Vikings with his second win in the past week. Bukhari beat Lewis-Clark State's Guilherme Medeiros 7-5, 6-2 at line five, six days after beating Seattle's Alex Chan 6-2, 6-4 at line six in his return to the Vikings' singles lineup.
Â
The Vikings return to the same court for their next match, as they face defending Big Sky tournament-champion Idaho in Lewiston at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
