PORTLAND, Ore. — You can count on a Viking distance runner to set an historic mark whenever the Portland State track & field team competes, even in the rain.
Sarah Medved broke a 15-year-old school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday, and
Alex Cisneros followed with the Vikings' first top 10 mark in the men's 5,000 meters in 13 years Saturday despite rainy conditions at the L&C Spring Break Open at the Eldon Fix Track.
Â
Cisneros won the 5,000 meters in 14:28.96, moving him up to sixth all time in the event. No Viking had entered the top 10 in the outdoor men's 5,000 since Blake Flanders in 2005, who Cisneros ironically knocked out of the top 10 with his mark Saturday.
Â
Cisneros accounted for two other historic marks during the indoor season, as he set the school records in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
Kaila Gibson also set the record in the women's indoor 5,000 meters, and
Alana Chaplin set the record in the women's outdoor 2,000-meter steeplechase.
Â
Gibson and Chaplin were also in action Saturday, as they competed in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, respectively. Gibson set a new personal best with her time of 4:41.36 in the 1,500 meters, and teammates
Meggie Karp and
McKenna Martin followed in 4:59.27 and 5:16.01, respectively.
Â
Chaplin, meanwhile, led a group of three Vikings in the 5,000 meters, as she finished in 18:00.80 – close to 24 seconds faster than the personal best she set at the OSU High Performance Meet last season.
Alana Baldwin-Joiner and
Jocelyn Reynolds followed Chaplin in the 5,000 meters, as they finished in 19:16.00 and 19:26.10, respectively.
Â
A number of Vikings won events in the sprints, including
Nia Powdrell, who was coming off a breakout meet at the Big Sky Indoor Championships at the end of February. Powdrell won the women's 100 meters while setting a PSU personal best by close to a quarter of a second with her time of 12.17 seconds.
Maya Jackson followed Powdrell in the 100 meters, finishing eighth in her time of 12.89 seconds.
Â
Kristen O'Handley, who also had a breakout meet at the Big Sky Indoor Championships, won the women's 200 meters in 25.20 seconds, which beat the indoor personal best of 25.29 seconds that she set at the conference indoor meet. O'Handley also placed second in the women's 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.19 seconds.
Â
The Viking women won the 4x100-meter relay, as well, as their 'A' team of
Natalie Cummings, Powdrell,
Ta'mara Richey and O'Handley finished in 47.86 seconds.
Â
Josh Pikes won the men's 200 meters by close to four-tenths of a second, as he finished in 22.19 seconds. Pikes also won his heat of the 100 meters by six tenths of a second, but finished third overall with his time of 10.96 seconds.
Â
Pikes was also part of the Viking men's 4x400-meter relay, along with
Zack Davis,
Will Payton and
Justin Desaki, who won in 3:24.70.
Â
Viktor Moen added another event win for the Vikings in the men's pole vault, as he cleared 15-01.75 (4.62m) to move into second place all time after his debut meet outdoors.
Donté Robinson, fresh off his win in the Big Sky heptathlon during the indoor season, set a new outdoor personal best in the pole vault with his clearance of 13-08.25 (4.17m). Junior newcomer
Griffin Johnson also cleared 12-08.25 (3.87m) in his Viking debut.
Â
Jean-Luc Toku led the entire way through the men's triple jump competition, as he jumped 46-07.25 (14.20m) on his first attempt of the day.
Â
The Viking women beat out Oregon State for first place in the team competition, finishing with 122 points to the Beavers' 115. The Viking men placed second with 102 team points, 21 points behind Western Oregon, which won the men's competition with 123.
Â
The Vikings will be back in action next week, as they head south down I-5 for the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., next Saturday.
