VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Portland State men's tennis team was due for a letdown after an emotional win over Southern Utah Friday, and the Vikings got just that via a 6-1 loss to Army West Point Saturday at the Club Green Meadows.
Â
The positive side for the Vikings (5-3) is that the letdown did not come against a Big Sky opponent, since the Vikings stepped out of conference for their match against the Black Knights (3-7).
Â
Otto Holtari provided the lone point for the Vikings in the match with a win at No. 5 singles, while
Nathan Boniel and
Gabe Souza won their match at No. 3 doubles.
Â
Holtari beat Army's Grant Patterson 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at line five – the third straight match Holtari has won in three sets. Holtari has dropped the opening set in all three of his recent three-set wins, but has rallied to win the second and third sets each time.
Â
Holtari has won four straight singles matches overall, and leads the Vikings with six singles wins behind a team-best 6-1 mark in singles. Holtari has four wins at No. 5 singles – a total that already ranks tied for the third-best single-season mark at the position, and only four wins off the single-season record of eight that Wil Cochrane set in 2016.
Â
Souza and
Sam Roberts won the opening sets of their matches at lines four and six, respectively, but both players ended up losing. Roberts lost his match against Army's David Mitchell in a third-set tiebreaker, while Souza lost in a 10-point match tiebreaker against the Black Knights' Anant Mundra.
Â
Souza won his doubles match with Boniel, however, as they snapped a two-match losing streak with a 6-2 win over Mitchell and Patterson at line three.
Â
Avery West and
Tommy Edwards lost just their second match of the season at No. 1 doubles, as they lost 4-6 to Army's Michael Nguyen and Gregory Shannon. West and Edwards had won six matches in a row coming into the match, including an upset of the 50th-ranked doubles team nationally in Idaho State's Peter Trhac and David Felix.
Â
The Vikings return to Big Sky play with a pair of matches against Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado next weekend. The Vikings host NAU at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, and then host UNC at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24. Â
