Viking Tight End Charlie Taumoepeau Selected As Second Team All-American

Portland State tight end Charlie Taumoepeau was named to the 2018 STATS FCS All-America second team on Dec. 18, followed by a Hero Sports second team All-America choice on Dec. 19. The junior from Federal Way, WA adds the honors to a first team All-Big Sky Conference selection last month.

Even with some bumps in the road, Taumoepeau lived up to his 2018 billing. He was named Preseason All-Big Sky and Preseason All-American in July. And, when the season started, the 6-3, 240-pounder did not disappoint. He put up 100-yard receiving games against a pair of FBS opponents in Nevada and Oregon, scoring two touchdowns in each game. By game three, Taumoepeau had five TDs and led the nation in yards per catch.

An ankle injury in game five against Idaho slowed his production as Taumoepeau missed the next two contests. Even upon returning, he was still trying to get back to full speed. By the end of the season though, Taumoepeau had team highs of 28 receptions, 580 yards and five touchdowns. He ranked first in the Big Sky among tight ends in receptions per game and yards, and second in touchdowns. Taumoepeau ranked sixth in the nation in yards per catch (20.7) and first among all tight ends.

During his sophomore season of 2017, in which he was healthy for 11 games, Taumoepeau had 45 catches for 673 yards and three TDs. It was the most receptions by a Viking tight end since Hall of Famer Barry Naone had 48 in 1988.

Taumoepeau will be a senior in 2019. He has 81 receptions, 1,402 yards and nine touchdowns in 31 career games.

STATS Inc. sponsors the FCS All-America team selections. The All-America Team includes 100 players from 61 schools and all 13 FCS conferences. The Missouri Valley Football Conference had the most selections with 17, while CAA Football (12), the Big Sky Conference (11) and the Southern Conference (11) also reached double figures.
