Portland, OR - Portland State had the final possession of the first half, trailing Loyola Marymount by 15 points.
Holland Woods drove the lane with a chance to cut into the lead, but lost control of the ball with just seconds remaining. LMU's Dameane Douglas scooped up the loose ball inside his own restricted area and fired it the length of the court.
Â
The shot from some 80 feet away dropped as the halftime horn sounded, telling the story of the night in a single play. The Vikings struggled shooting the ball while LMU could seemingly do no wrong and the Lions roared to an 85-58 win at the Viking Pavilion.
Â
The shooting woes that have plagued the Vikings all season long were apparent Saturday as well. PSU shot just 35 percent from the floor and 21 percent from three-point range. The Vikings were also outrebounded (37-36) for the first time this season.
Â
Loyola Marymount, who improved to 10-1 and has wins against UNLV and Georgetown on their resume, jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead and never looked back. They forced the Vikings into six turnovers in the first six minutes and had an eight-point lead at the first media timeout of the game.
Â
The lead swelled to double-digits at the nine-minute mark of the first half and LMU didn't let the Vikings back at all. The Lions scored 19 points off turnovers to help take the 43-25 halftime lead.
Â
Jamie Orme made a couple of big plays to start the second half, twice stealing the ball and making a play at the rim on the other end to cut the lead to 13, but it was as close as the Vikings would get. Portland State would go on to receive two technical fouls in the second half of a frustrating game all around.
"I take full responsibility for our team's result," said Viking Coach
Barret Peery. "This one is on me but hopefully we will learn a lot, get better from it and move forward.
"Give LMU credit. They came in here, got us from the jump and never looked back."
Rashaad Goolsby had a 12-point, four-rebound game to lead the Vikings. Woods also had 12 points, seven of which came from the free throw line.
Sal Nuhu continued to play well off the bench with nine points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Â
Portland State's bench outscored LMU's 23-17, but the Lions leading scored James Batemon poured in 26. The 27-point loss is the worst home result for the Vikings in the past 15 years.
Â
The Vikings dropped to 5-5 on the season and have lost their last two games. It was also Portland State's first home loss of the season (4-1).
