4th-Ranked Eagles Offense Overwhelms Vikings In Second Half

Boxscore – HTM | PDF

Hillsboro, OR - The Portland State Vikings kept things close with No. 4 ranked Eastern Washington on Senior Day at Hillsboro Stadium for about 29 minutes, but a big second half from the Eagles resulted in a 74-23 loss in the final game of the season.

The Vikings couldn't limit the big play ability of Eastern Washington, who had seven offensive plays of at least 30 yards. The quick strike Eagles also had seven touchdown drives that took 65 seconds or less and a punt return touchdown.

Davis Alexander and the Viking offense had a solid night. The quarterback completed 21-of-34 for 192 yards and two scores and ran for another, but he was also picked off three times in the second half. The Vikings also fumbled late in the game and finished with four turnovers.

Junior tight end Charlie Taumoepeau hauled in eight catches for 78 yards while receiver Emmanuel Daigbe had four catches for 60 yards and a pair of scores. Darian Green led the charge on the ground, rushing for 79 yards.

Portland State finished the night with 304 yards (192 passing, 112 rushing) of total offense. They blocked an extra point attempt late in the game and scored on the return for two points.

Eastern Washington, meanwhile, had 624 total yards. Starting quarterback Eric Barriere had five passing touchdowns and they also scored five times on the ground to go with the one punt return touchdown. They ran the ball for 378 yards.

The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to receive, choosing to give their offense, one that scores over 42 points a game, the chance to establish an early lead. Their gamble paid off well. Eastern Washington scored twice in the opening six minutes to build a 14-0 lead from which they never looked back.

Portland State made it competitive in the first half, cutting the deficit to just a single touchdown twice, but every time the Vikings put together a scoring drive Eastern Washington answered right back.

Taumoepeau did the heavy lifting for the Vikings in the middle of the field, making catches that moved Portland State into the Eagles territory multiple times. Daigbe, meanwhile, got behind the defense on both of his touchdown grabs.

Eastern Washington finishes the regular season 9-2, 7-1 in the Big Sky Conference and with at least a share of the league title. The Eagles learn their post-season fate on Sunday.

The young Viking team finishes the season 4-7, 3-5 BSC, but showed plenty of potential that suggests they will be ready for a successful season in 2019.
