Gibson, Cisneros Sweep School Records in Indoor 5,000 Meters on First Day of UW Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. —
There's something about the 5,000 meters and the UW Invitational for the Portland State track & field team. Kaila Gibson and Alex Cisneros broke the school records in the women's and men's 5,000 meters, respectively, Friday – a year after Cisneros originally set the record in the men's 5,000 at the 2017 UW Invite.

Gibson beat Cisneros to the party Friday, as she set the first record of the day with her finish in 16:53.60 in the second section of the women's 5,000 meters. Gibson's time beat the old record of 17:01.73 that Amanda Boman set in 2015 by more than eight seconds.

Gibson had never run an indoor 5,000-meter race before as a Viking, but beat her outdoor personal best of 17:23.32 by close to 30 seconds. Sarah Medved also set an indoor personal best with her finish in 17:33.71, moving her up to fifth all time in the event at Portland State.

Cisneros' personal best in the men's 5,000 was the school record, of course, which he set one year from Saturday at the 2017 UW Invite. Cisneros ran that race in 14:43.07, but beat that time by over 23 seconds with his finish in 14:19.95 Friday.

Cisneros set the record while winning his section of the men's 5,000 meters, and finished as the top collegian across all sections in the event, as well as seventh overall. Cisneros beat nine athletes from the invitational section of the event that featured professional runners such as the Nike Oregon Project's Yomif Kejelcha and Galen Rupp, who finished 1-2 overall.

Keegan Winkle's pursuit of the school record in the men's indoor pole vault, meanwhile, will go on at least another week. Winkle cleared 15-02.25 (4.63m) Friday, the third straight meet at which he's cleared 15 feet to start the season. Winkle also took three attempts at what would have been a school-record height of 15-08.25 (4.78m) – the third straight meet at which Winkle has made attempts at heights above the current school record.

Freshman Josh Pikes won his section of the men's 200 meters in 22.22 seconds, beating Diab Davis of Cal by more than a tenth of a second. Sophomore Nia Powdrell also won her section of the women's 200 meters in 25.68 seconds Friday.

The Vikings will look to add more school records to their haul Saturday, as events continue at the UW Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m.
