CORVALLIS, Ore. —
Pac-12 foe Oregon State needed a 94th-minute golden goal to beat the Portland State women's soccer team Friday, as the Vikings pushed the Beavers to the brink before succumbing in overtime, 1-0.

The Vikings (2-4-0) entered the match against the Beavers (3-1-2) with an 8-35-2 all-time record against Pac-12 opponents, and – outside of a 1-0 overtime win over Oregon in 2014 – hadn't earned a point against a Pac-12 opponent since 2009.

The Vikings were in contention for one point or better against the Beavers Friday, however, until Oregon State's Shea O'Connor scored the game-winning goal four minutes into the first overtime period.

"We don't think about the win or loss after a game like that," PSU head coach Katie Burton said after the match. "That's the best we've played all season as a unit. Their attitude, effort and work rate was tremendous. If we play like that in Big Sky play, we are going to go far."

The Viking defense stepped up to help force overtime for the Vikings, even as they played without captain and All-Big Sky first-team selection Kristin Moyer, who sat out the match with an injury. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Abbie Faingold made six saves in the match – her fourth match out of six this season where she's finished with 5+ saves.

Faingold and the defense withstood a barrage of shots from the Beavers in the second half, when OSU outshot the Vikings 12-3. Faingold made four saves in the second half alone, including two in the final 12 minutes, when OSU fired four shots and tallied four corner kicks.

Faingold also saved a shot from O'Connor in the third minute of overtime, and OSU's Emma Jones sent a follow-up shot wide.

The Viking offense, meanwhile, finished with six shots in the match, behind three each in the first and second halves. Sophomore forward Regan Russell recorded the Vikings' one shot on goal in the match, as she forced OSU goalkeeper Bella Geist – the Pac-12 leader in saves entering the match – into making a save in the 22nd minute.

Sophomore midfielder Liv Jillings also had a good look at a possible go-ahead goal for the Vikings in the 70th minute, when she sent a shot off the crossbar.

The match turned in the Beavers' favor following Jillings' shot, however, as the Beavers outshot the Vikings 10-0 the rest of the way, ending with O'Connor's game-winner in overtime.

The Vikings will now look to break their bad luck in Sunday matches, as they return home for a match against Chicago State this Sunday at 12 p.m. The Vikings are 0-2-0 so far this season in Sunday matches, but the blueprint for success is there for the Vikings following their good showing against the Beavers Friday.

Match Notes: The Vikings fall to 4-11-1 all time against Oregon State with Friday's loss…The Vikings fall to 8-36-2 all time against Pac-12 opponents with Friday's loss…Faingold stands just six saves short of entering the top 10 all time in career saves at Portland State after Friday, as she now has 100 in her career.
