OGDEN, Utah — A 55th-minute Weber State penalty kick turned the tide against the Portland State women's soccer team Friday. The PK opened the scoring in the match after a scoreless first half, and the Wildcats tacked on another goal late to hand the Vikings a 2-0 loss on the road in Big Sky play.
Â
The Wildcats (2-9-0, 1-2-0 Big Sky) held the Vikings (4-6-0, 1-1-0 Big Sky) to just seven shots in the match – the third time this season the Vikings have been held to fewer than 10 shots.
Â
The teams were even at 4-to-4 in shots after the first half, but the match turned on the penalty kick for the Wildcats early in the second half. The Wildcats earned the PK on a foul in the box, and Morgan Quarnberg slotted the shot into the right side of the net for the go-ahead goal.
Â
The Wildcats scored the penalty kick on their first shot of the second half, and outshot the Vikings 7-3 the rest of the way.
Â
The Vikings pressed for an equalizer late, but lost Quarnberg in their push forward, resulting in the second goal for the Wildcat junior in the 85th minute. Quarnberg got behind the Viking defense as she broke for goal near midfield and ran on to a ball from Madison Garlock for her second goal of the match.
Â
The Vikings will get a chance to quickly wash the taste of Friday's match out of their mouths, as they make a quick turnaround for their next match Sunday. The Vikings head to Pocatello, Idaho, for a match at Idaho State at 1 p.m. (MT) Sunday.
