HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Portland State women's soccer team will put this one behind them in a hurry.
Â
With Big Sky Conference play just five days away, the Vikings hosted Seattle for their final non-conference match of the season Sunday. The last tune-up before conference did not go as the Vikings had hoped, however, as they lost 4-0.
Â
The Vikings (3-5-0) got behind early against the Redhawks (4-4-0), an NCAA tournament team last season that came into the match with wins against Pacific (Calif.) – a team that beat the Vikings 3-1 earlier in the season – and Idaho, which went unbeaten against Big Sky opponents last season. The Redhawks scored just one minute, 23 seconds into the match, and then tacked on another goal in the 15th minute.
Â
Both of the Redhawks' early goals came after goal kicks for the Vikings, with the Redhawks winning possession in the air on both goal kicks. The Redhawks made quick passes up the field after winning each goal kick, leading to goals for Leahi Manthei and Jessie Ray.
Â
The Vikings held steady for the rest of the first half and showed some fight coming out for the start of the second half. A Seattle counterattack led to the Redhawks' third goal of the match just one minute, 19 seconds into the second half, however, and the Redhawks maintained control of the match from there.
Â
Jennifer Plummer added a fourth goal for the Redhawks in the 78th minute, when she got a ball at the near post from Rachel Bowler following a throw-in and slotted a shot past Viking goalkeeper
Abbie Faingold.
Â
The Vikings will now look to bounce back for Friday's conference opener against Southern Utah. The Vikings and Thunderbirds will kick off at 1 p.m. Friday at Hillsboro Stadium.
