Rielly Scored 30 as the Vikings Overcame a 16-Point Deficit to Win in Overtime

IRVINE, Calif. – The Vikings trailed by 16 in the first quarter but came all the way back to win by 10, 82-72, in overtime behind Sidney Rielly's season-high 30 points.
 
Portland State trailed by two, 64-62, with 6.7 seconds remaining and no timeouts left. Courtney West inbounded the ball to Kylie Jimenez who brought it up the right side. She skipped the ball across the three-point line to Ashely Bolston with 1.8 left on the clock.
 
Bolston found Rielly all alone just inside the three-point line in the left corner. Rielly did not have much time to think about the shot as she caught it, put up the shot, and hit nothing but net as the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 64-64 and send it to overtime.
 
The teams traded points early in the overtime period before Rielly hit an and-1 to put the Vikings up 69-66. After a Jumper by UC Irvine, back-to-back baskets by West and Bolston put the Vikings up five with 1:51 remaining in overtime. Rielly added a pair of free throws to make it a seven-point game.
 
A jumper pulled the Anteaters within five at 75-70 with 1:24 left on the clock. From that point on the Vikings iced the game at the free-throw line. They went 7-for-8 at the line over the final minute of the game, capped by four straight by Bolston, to go up 11 with 14 ticks left. A late free throw made it 82-72 but the comeback was complete.
 
Rielly's game-tying jumper, which sent the game to overtime, capped a six-point comeback over the final 30 seconds of regulation.
 
Down by six, Jimenez hit her second three-pointer of the game to pull the Vikings' within three with 19 seconds left. Rielly hit and and-1 to tie the game with 12 seconds on the clock. After a UC Irvine timeout advanced the ball, the Anteaters retook the lead with a layup off the inbounds play.
 
With no timeouts, the Vikings had two go the distance. They pushed the ball and Bolston found Rielly for the game-tying jumper.
 
Over the final minute of regulation and over the course of overtime, Rielly scored 11 of her season-high 30 points. She played just five minutes in the first half scoring five points after finding herself in early foul trouble. She scored 19 points in the second half before adding six in overtime.
 
Rielly went 10-for-19 from the floor and 3-for-9 from three-point range. She also went 7-for-8 at the free throw line. She did all of her damage in just 28 minutes of action. It was her 16th-career 20-plus scoring game and her second career 30-point game.
 
Bolston added 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting for the game and came up big for the Vikings down the stretch. She scored 11 of her 17 points over the final two minutes of regulation and overtime.
 
Jimenez and Brown each added nine points for the Vikings, while Pia Jurhar added eight points, a team-high 10 rebounds, and a pair of blocks coming off the bench.
 
West had just six points for the Vikings but her impact was felt all over the court. She pulled down nine rebounds, had four assists, tallied a team-high five steals, and recorded a season-high five blocks, four coming in the first half.
 
West's five blocks moves her into sole possession of first on the Vikings' career blocks list in just her 43rd career game. She now has 120 career blocks averaging 2.8 blocks per game.
 
Portland State struggled mightily from the floor in the first quarter. The Vikings went just 1-for-13 (.077) and scored just seven points, its fewest in a quarter this season. They picked things up in the second quarter going 6-for-16 before shooting .600 from the floor (9-for-15) in the third. For the game, the Vikings outshot the Anteaters .386-to-.366.  
 
After briefly leading in the opening minute of the game, Portland State (5-5 overall) trailed UC Irvine (5-6) by as much as 16 points in the opening period. The Vikings cut the lead to seven at the break. They continued to cut into the lead before Brown gave the Vikings a brief lead at 39-38 midway through the third quarter  
 
UC Irvine built up a seven-point lead, 51-44, heading to the fourth quarter. The Vikings outscored the Anteaters 20-13 in the period to tie the game and send it to overtime.
 
The Vikings built off their momentum at the end of regulation and outscored UC Irvine 18-8 to win 82-72. The Vikings improved to 1-1 in overtime games this year.
 
UC Irvine's Yazzy Sa'Dullah led the Anteaters with 13 points in the game. Sabrina Engelstad was the only other player to score in double figures with 10.
 
The Vikings close out non-conference play next Tuesday, Dec. 19 against Old Miss at the Pamplin Sports Center. The Rebels are 9-1 on the season and play at No. 9 Oregon on Sunday before heading to the Rose City.
