Five Score in Double Figures to Lead Vikings Past Pilots, 77-71

PORTLAND – A season-high five players scored in double figures as Portland State took down cross-town rival the University of Portland, 77-71, Tuesday night at the Chiles Center.  
 
Portland State (3-4 overall) led by 10 with 1:13 left in the fourth quarter. Portland (3-3) was able to cut the lead to five points at 76-71 before a free throw by FR G Kylie Jimenez with two seconds left gave the Vikings the six-point win.
 
A season-high five Vikings scored in double figures led by JR G Sidney Rielly's game-high 18 points. She went 6-for-13 from the floor with a trio of three pointers in 34 minutes of action. It was Rielly's seventh-straight double-digit scoring game to start the season.
 
JR G Kiana Brown added 13 points of her own in 31 minutes. She struggled from distance against the Pilots, going 1-for-7 from beyond the arc but made it count when she needed it to. The Pilots cut the lead to just two early in the fourth quarter before a jumper from JR F Pia Jurhar ended put the Vikings up four. Brown then hit her three-pointer to put the Vikings up seven.
 
Jurhar ended the game with six points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her second double-digit rebounding game. She tallied a block in 22 minutes after playing through foul trouble.
 
Jimenez scored 11 points and recorded a career-high seven assists in her 36 minutes. JR G Corey James added 10 points, going 3-for-6 from the floor with three three-pointers.
 
Portland State shot .451 from the floor, going 23-for-51 for the game. The Vikings hit eight three-pointers and went 23-for-32 at the line. They held Portland to a .313 shooting mark from the floor and a .227 mark from distance.
 
The teams traded opening baskets before the Vikings went on a 7-0 run on back-to-back jumpers from JR F Courtney West and a three-pointer by Rielly to go up 9-2, which forced Portland to call a timeout midway through the opening period.
 
Another jumper by West out of the timeout put the Vikings up 11-2 before a 6-0 run by the Pilots pulled them within three at 11-8. An 18-foot-jumper by SO F Tatiana Streun ended the run and put the Vikings again up five. After a James free throw, Portland went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-14 lead with 51 seconds left in the opening period.
 
The teams traded points over the final minute but the Vikings led 18-17 thanks to four straight points by Jimenez. Portland State shot .580 (7-for-12) from the floor but turned the ball over seven times, leading to seven points for UP in the first period.
 
Portland took an 21-18 lead early in the second quarter before a three-pointer from James tied it at 21-21. The teams traded points before a three-pointer by the Pilots put them up 28-27 with 4:43 left in the first half.
 
The teams traded points again before the Vikings went on a 7-0 run to go up 39-35 with 1:45 left the in the half. After a free throw by the Pilots, Jimenez hit a three-pointer from the wing to give the Vikings a 42-36 lead. A pair of free throws by Streun increased the Vikings' lead to eight. The Pilots hit a pair of late free throws to make it a 44-38 game at the half.
 
The Vikings shot .571 from the floor in the first half, going 16-for-28. They hit their last five shots, including a trio of three pointers. Their hot shooting was in large part due to the 5-for-5 shooting of West, who led the Vikings with 12 points at the break.
 
West played through foul trouble nearly the entire second half after picking up her third foul just 1:05 into the third quarter. She added a free throw in the second half to finish with 13 points for the game. She pulled down seven rebounds and tallied three of the team's seven blocks. Her three blocks increased her career total to 110, eight blocks shy of the Portland State career record.
 
Portland cut the lead to four to open the second half but the Vikings countered with a 6-0 run, the final five coming from Rielly, to give the Vikings a 10-point lead at 51-41 midway through the quarter. Back-to-back baskets by the Pilots and it was a six-point game at the media timeout in the third.
 
Portland outscored the Vikings 9-7 over the remainder of the period and cut the lead to four points at 58-54 heading to the fourth. Rielly scored eight of the team's 14 points in the quarter going 3-for-5 from the floor. After shooting over 50-percent from the floor in the first half, the Vikings went just 3-for-13 from the floor but 7-for-9 at the line.
 
The teams played even through the early stages of the fourth before Brown hit a big three-pointer, her first of the game, to put the Vikings up seven at 66-59 with 6:04 left in regulation.
 
Portland cut the lead again to four points before a pair of free throws by Rielly and a fast-break layup by Brown made it 71-63 with 2:10 on the clock.
 
A pair of free throws by Streun gave the Vikings' their second 10-point lead of the game at 73-63. The Pilots hit and and-one to pull within seven before three free-throws built up a 10-point game once again.  
 
The Vikings allowed the Pilots to cut the lead to five before a free throw by Jimenez with two seconds on the clock gave the Vikings the 77-71 victory.
 
Tuesday's win makes Portland State Athletics a perfect 3-0 against the Pilots at the Chiles Center this season. The volleyball team defeated UP in straight sets in September followed by the men's basketball team's 80-75 win earlier this month.
 
Portland also had five players score in double figures led by Darian Slaga's team-high 15 points. She went 5-for-7 from the floor, 3-for-4 from distance, before fouling out with 3:37 left in the game.
 
The Vikings head to Spokane, Wash. this Saturday, Dec. 2 where they will take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. PT.
