Vikings Fall to Bulldogs in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Vikings suffered their worst loss of the season, 91-52, to the Gonzaga Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Wash.  
                                                                                                                                                                           
A 21-0 run by Gonzaga (4-3 overall) over a 17-minute span in the first half put the game out of reach for Portland State (3-5). The Vikings shot a season-low .311 from the floor, going 19-for-61 from the floor. PSU came into the game 20th in the nation with 168 free-throw attempts. The Vikings got to the line just 10 times, going 7-for-10.
 
RS-JR G Kiana Brown led the Vikings with 17 points. She went 6-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-7 from three-point range. Her five three pointers were a career high and were the most since former-Viking Mikaela Kay hit five against UC Irvine almost exactly a year ago to the date.
 
JR G Sidney Rielly came into the game as the Big Sky Conference's top scorer. She was held to just 11 points in 29 minutes of action. She struggled from the floor, going 3-for-12 and 1-for-3 from distance.
 
Early turnover troubles hurt the Vikings during the opening quarter. The Vikings turned the ball over eight times, which led to 10 of Gonzaga's 19 points as the Bulldogs led 19-16 at the end of one. The Zags led 10-6 midway through the first quarter the Vikings went on a 10-0 run, started by back-to-back threes from Brown and Rielly, to put PSU up 16-10. Gonzaga ended the quarter on a 9-0 run of its own to take the three-point lead at the end of the period.
 
Gonzaga extended its run to 14-0 to start the second quarter to go up 24-16, which forced Head Coach Lynn Kennedy to take an early timeout. Gonzaga continued to extended its run to 21-0 to go up 31-16 before Brown ended the run with a three-pointer with 5:14 left in the first half.
 
Portland State cut the lead to 13 points after a pair of free throws from SO F Tatiana Streun before Gonzaga ended the half on another 9-0 run to lead 47-25 at the break.
 
After starting the game 7-for-10 from the floor, the Vikings hit just three of their next 20 shots, shooting .333 (10-for-30) at the break. On the other side, Gonzaga ended the half shooting .474 (18-for-38) and hit seven of their final 10 shots of the half. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting .472 (34-for-72) from the floor.
 
Portland State closed the gap early in the third quarter after Brown hit another three-pointer followed by a pair of free throws from Rielly. The Zags went on an 8-0 run to go up 57-30. During the run, PSU went 0-for-4 with four turnovers. Gonzaga continued to increase its lead before taking a 70-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
The Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 21-12 over the final 10 minutes to take the game 91-52.
 
Jill Barta led all players with 30 points, going 10-for-19 from the floor and 7-for-7 at the line. The Bulldogs had two other players record double-doubles in the contest.
 
Portland State heads home next week for its second home game of the season. The Vikings host Kennedy's alma mater, Northwest University. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. PT at the Pamplin Sports Center on the Campus of Lewis and Clark College.
