Vikings Open Home Slate with Blowout win over Lions, 95-32

PORTLAND – The Portland State women's basketball team took care of business in a big way, opening their home slate with a 95-32 win over Multnomah University Saturday afternoon at the Pamplin Sports Complex on the campus of Lewis and Clark College.

Portland State (2-4 overall) had four players score in double figures, led by FR F Savannah Dhaliwal's career-high 26 points. She shot .750 from the floor, going 9-for-12 with a pair of three-pointers. She also went a perfect 9-for-9 at the free-throw line. She recorded three assists and a career-high nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double.

Fellow freshman Labrea Denson got into the scoring action with a career-high 18 points, going 7-for-12 from the floor. She too hit a pair of three-pointers and had four assists in 28 minutes.

The Vikings, having played in so many close contests over the first month of the season, have struggled to find playing time for most of their non-starters. They got ample playing time against Multnomah as the Vikings' four bench players averaged over 28 minutes. The bench combined for 53 of the team's 95 points.

JR F Pia Jurhar played a season-high 29 minutes, scoring 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. She pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds for her third career double-double. SO F Tatiana Streun pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds, while adding a team-high five assists to go along with four points.

As was to be expected, the Vikings out-rebounded the Lions 52-to-28 in the contest and 26-to-8 in the second half. Portland State also recorded a season-high 26 assists on a season-high 36 field goals.

Portland State pressured Multnomah through most of the game and forced a season-high 23 turnovers. The Vikings turned those 23 takeaways into 35 points.

JR G Sidney Rielly scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting in just 20 minutes of action. FG G Kylie Jimenez added seven points, on 3-of-5 shooting in 12 minutes.

After hitting 1-of-7 from the floor to open the game, the Vikings hit seven straight baskets to open the game on a 19-2 run. The Vikings added four free throws late in the first quarter to lead 25-2 at the end of the first.

Portland State opened the second quarter hitting four straight baskets to jump out to 33-2 lead. The Vikings had another stretch of five straight makes, including back-to-back three-pointers from Denson and Dhaliwal. The Vikings executed a perfect inbounds play to Rielly for an easy layup to give the Vikings a 51-7 lead at the break.

Every Viking who dressed for the game played and scored at least two points in the first half. Rielly led all players with 15 points over the first 20 minutes. The Vikings shot .514 from the floor, going 19-for-37. They recorded assists on 14 of their 19 first-half field goals.

Portland State put together a 7-0 run early in the third quarter and then closed out the period on a 16-2 run as the Vikings outscored the Lions 26-8 in the third to go up 77-15 heading to the fourth.

The Vikings pulled off the gas a bit in the fourth quarter en route to their 95-32 victory. The 95 points are the most scored by Portland State since it defeated Sacramento State, 97-73, on the road in January of 2011.

Portland State next hits the court on Tuesday, Nov. 28 against cross-town rival the University of Portland. Tipoff at the Chiles Center is slated for 7 p.m. PT.
