Brown's Career-High 27 Not Enough, Vikings Fall to Redhawks 91-77

SEATTLE – Kiana Brown scored a career-high 27 points for the Vikings, but they fell to the Seattle Redhawks, 91-77, Wednesday night at the Connolly Complex in Seattle, Wash.

Brown, a redshirt-junior guard in her first season playing for Portland State, led the team with a career-high 27 points. She shot a career-high .667 from the floor going 10-for-15. Her 10 field goals were also a career high. She went 3-for-7 from three-point range and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. It was her third straight double-digit scoring game and first career 20-point performance.

JR G Sidney Rielly became the first Viking since Kelsey Kahle in 2008-09 to post four consecutive 20-point games with her 25 points against the Redhawks. She shot .500 from the floor, going 10-for-20 overall and 3-for-9 from distance.

Brown and Rielly became the first Viking teammates to put up at least 20 points in a game since Rielly and JR G Ashley Bolston put up 28 points each against Southern Utah last season. It is also the first time that two Vikings posted double-digit field goals since Rielly and Bolston did it at Sacramento State, also last year.

Brown and Rielly combined to shoot .571 (20-for-35) from the floor, while the rest of the team shot .286 (10-for-35). JR G Courtney West was the only other Viking in double digits with 10. SO F Tatiana Streun had a nice night off the bench for Portland State. She scored only four points (2-for-4 FG), but pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for her second-straight 10 rebound performance.

The difference in the game came from beyond the arc. Portland State (1-4 overall) shot .300 from distance, going 6-for-20, while Seattle (3-2) shot .500 from three-point range, going 12-for-24.

The Vikings led early but the Redhawks pulled within one at 11-10. Rielly hit a three-pointer to put the Vikings up four at 14-10. Her triple started a 14-2 run to put Portland State up 25-12 with 3:26 left in the opening period. Seattle held the Vikings scoreless over the remainder of the quarter and cut the lead to 25-21 at the end of one.

Seattle tied the game and then took its first lead on a three-pointer at 30-29. The teams traded points before back-to-back triples by the Redhawks put them up 38-33 midway through the period. JR G Corey James hit a pair of free throws to pull the Vikings within four at 45-41 but a pair of late baskets by Seattle gave the Redhawks the 49-41 lead at the break.

The Vikings shot .473 from the floor in the first quarter going 9-for-19 with a trio of three-pointers. It was a different story in the second. The Vikings went 6-for-19 and was 0-for-4 from beyond the arc as the Redhawks took the eight-point lead into the intermission.

Rielly was terrific over the first 20 minutes, scoring 18 points. She went 7-for-13 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers. She also went 2-for-2 at the line as the Vikings went 8-for-8 at the line as a team in the first half. She cooled off in the second half, scoring just seven points and going 3-for-7 from the floor.

The big difference in the second quarter was the three-point shooting by the Redhawks. They hit a pair of triples in the first quarter but went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in the second. The Vikings also opened the game hitting seven of their first 10 shots, but ended the half hitting just three of their final 10.

Seattle hit the first basket of the second half to extend its lead to 10 points at 51-41. After a basket by Brown, an and-one, followed by a three-point, put the Redhawks up 14 at 57-43. The Vikings hit back-to-back jumpers to pull within 10 before Seattle scored five unanswered points to go up 62-47 with 5:09 left in the third.

The Vikings came back with seven-straight points to cut the lead to single-digits. PSU went on a run and cut the lead to five points but a three pointer and a layup by the Redhawks made it 70-60 with 46 seconds left in the third.

A jumper by Brown with eight seconds left made it a 70-62 game heading to the fourth. The basket gave her the first 20-point game of her career. Rielly added a bucket in the third to give her 20 points heading to the fourth.

The teams traded baskets before a three-pointer from Brown cut the lead to seven at 74-67 with 7:39 remaining. After Seattle went 1-for-2 at the line, a layup by Rielly made it 75-69. The Redhawks built up a double-digit lead again at 82-71 before the teams traded three-pointers to 85-74. A FR G Kylie Jimenez free throw cut the lead to 10 but back-to-back layups by Seattle put the Redhawks up 14 with 1:24 left in the game.

Brown hit the final basket of the game with 28 seconds left but the Vikings fell by a final score of 91-77.

Seattle had five players score in double figures, including a pair of 20-point performances. Alexis Montgomery led the Redhawks with 25 points, going 10-for-21 from the floor with four three-pointers. She also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Portland State will have Thanksgiving off before hitting the gym again on Friday in preparation for its home opener against Multnomah on Saturday, Nov. 25. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. PT at the Pamplin Sports Center on the campus of Lewis and Clark College.
