Vikings Fall to Aggies Shooting Barrage, 79-67

DAVIS, Calif. – The Vikings got into a three-point shootout and could not keep up, falling 79-67 to the UC Davis Aggies Friday night in Davis, Calif.

Each team put up over 20 three-pointers but UC Davis (3-0 overall) hit 15, while Portland State (0-3) hit just nine, which proved to be the difference as the Vikings fell by the 12-point margin.

JR G Sidney Rielly posted her second-consecutive 20-point game with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. She also went 4-for-5 from three-point range and 2-for-3 at the line. It was her team-best 13th career 20-point game and it was her fourth career game hitting at least three three-pointers.

FR G Kylie Jimenez continued her stellar play running the point for Portland State. She scored 13 points, going 5-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. She played 32 minutes and did not turn the ball over once. She has now scored at least 13 points with three three-pointers in each over her first three collegiate games.

The other three Portland State starter combined for 24 points, led by JR G Kiana Browns' 12 points. JR G Corey James had eight points and six rebounds in a team-high 33 minutes.

Once again, the Vikings struggled to get any production from their bench. Portland State got only 10 points from its bench, eight coming from FR F Savannah Dhaliwal, six of which came over the final 1:11.

The Vikings hit the first basket of the game before taking an early 7-3 lead on a jumper from JR F Courtney West. A jumper by SO F Tatiana Streun put the Vikings up six at 11-5 midway through the opening period. The Aggies pulled within one after a 6-0 run. The Vikings hit a pair of two-pointers, while the Aggies hit a pair of three-pointers over the final two minutes of the first and UC Davis led 17-15 at the end of the first.

Jimenez put the Vikings up one at 18-17 early in the second quarter. At that point, the Vikings were shooting .727 (8-for-11) from the floor. The Vikings would go stone cold over the rest of the first half hitting one of their next 14 shots to close out the half.

Despite the poor shooting, the Vikings only trailed 34-27 at the break. Jimenez had eight points to lead the Vikings in the first half.

Brown hit a three-pointer followed by a layup by Rielly to make it a 40-36 game midway through the third quarter. Jimenez then drained one from downtown to make it a one point game. That would be as close as the Vikings would get. They traded points to 45-42 before the Aggies closed out the third on a 12-3 run to up 57-45 heading to the fourth.

UC Davis opened up a 21-point lead with 5:21 left in the game. Rielly hit back-to-back three pointers to cut into the lead. She traded points with the Aggies but another three-pointer made it a 79-62 game. Dhaliwal scored the final six points to cut into the lead but the Aggies won 79-67.

UC Davis had a pair of players score 20 points. Rachel Nagel scored 20 points, going 7-for-13 from the floor with six three-pointers.

Portland State has a quick turnaround as they head to San Jose, Calif. where they will take on the San Jose State Spartans Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. PT.
