Boxscore - HTM | PDF

Sacramento, CA - Jiday Ugbaja was averaging just three points a game, but he made the big points for Sacramento State, giving them a chance at at overtime, and eventually a win, as the Hornets beat the Vikings, 80-77, at the Nest.

Portland State led 67-58 with 2:52 to play but did not score for the remainder of regulation. The Hornets ran off the final nine points in regulation including three in the final second. Ugbaja was fouled on a desperation three-point attempt with 0.9 seconds left. He went to the free throw line and calmly sunk all three shots to send the game to overtime.

Sacramento State scored the first six points in the extra session before the Vikings fought back. Traylin Farris scored twice inside, as did De'Sean Parsons. When Parsons completed a three-point play with 1:16 on the clock, the Vikings were back on top, 77-76. But they wouldn't score again.

Eric Stuteville converted a layup to put the Hornets up 78-77. Then after a Viking miss, PSU had to play defense. They got a steal and raced up court with a chance to go ahead inside the final 10 seconds. Zach Gengler missed a pull-up jump shot from 15 feet and Farris' tip attempt did not go either. Nick Hornsby rebounded for the Hornets and was fouled with 2.2 seconds remaining. He made both free throws and the Vikings took the loss.

Calaen Robinson scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half but fouled out in regulation. He also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds, had three assists and two steals in helping bring PSU back from a nine-point halftime deficit. Robinson made 7-10 shots from the field, 4-5 three-pointers and 5-6 at the line in tying his career scoring high.

PSU lost their second in a row and third in four games. The Vikings record fell to 11-8 on the season, 4-4 in the Big Sky Conference.  Sacramento State improved to 7-12, 4-4, and has won four of its last five games.

Portland State had its second straight poor shooting game, hitting 27-69 from the field (.391) and 6-25 from three-point range (.240). The Vikings still competed well by making 11 steals, forcing 19 Hornet turnovers and winning the rebound battle, 39-37.

Sacramento State led 37-28 at halftime, but within the first five minutes of the second half the Vikings worked their way back into a 42-42 tie. A Deontae North three-pointer gave the Vikings a 45-43 lead with 13:50 left in the game and they never trailed again until overtime.

North also had a strong game, scoring 14 points, but he too fouled out in regulation. Farris scored 13 points and had eight rebounds for the Vikings.

Stuteville scored 17 points to lead Sacramento State. Marcus Graves scored 12 points with eight assists and five rebounds.

The Hornets were 24-50 from the field (.480) and 10-25 from distance (.400).
