Flagstaff, AZ – Mike Green scored 26 points and hit a clutch three-pointer in the final minute to stop a Portland State comeback and give Northern Arizona an 83-76 Big Sky Conference win.
Â
PSU trailed by 11 with 5:07 remaining in the game, but rallied back to tie it in the final minute. Green's three-pointer with 32.4 seconds left broke that tie and put the Lumberjacks ahead 79-76. The Vikings missed a three-point shot on their ensuing possession. Green was soon fouled and made two free throws with 13 seconds left to all but seal the game.
Â
Green, a sophomore guard, scored 19 of his 26 in the second half in leading NAU to the win. He made 7-12 from the field, 6-9 three-pointers and also grabbed nine rebounds.
Â
De'Sean Parsons scored 19 points with 10 rebounds to pace the Vikings.
Â
The loss dropped PSU to 10-6 on the season, 3-2 in the Big Sky. It also ended a three-game road winning streak for the Vikings.
Â
A rare poor shooting performance was Portland State's ultimate undoing. The Vikings entered the game shooting a league-leading .502 from the field. On this night they managed only 31-71 (.437) from the field, 6-26 from three-point range (.231) and 8-13 at the line (.615). To make matters worse, they were also out-classed on the glass, 51-26, by the Lumberjacks.
Â
PSU got off to a good start, leading 9-0 early, but then missed the next 10 shots, falling behind 22-12. When Parsons finally made a three-pointer the Vikings had gone nearly seven-and-a-half minutes without a field goal.
Â
In addition to poor shooting, Portland State suffered foul trouble that hindered the offensive production. Still,
Deontae North scored eight points late in the half to rally PSU. Then
Bryce Canda hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull the game into a 37-37 tie.
Â
The contest remained close in the second half until the Vikings went into another drought, making only one field goal over a six-minute span. This time it was a 10-2 run for NAU as the Lumberjacks went up 58-51 with 9:11 left in the game.
Â
Later, when Green hit back-to-back three-pointers for the 'Jacks, PSU trailed 66-55 with 6:28 left. The Vikings were down 68-57 before a late rally sparked by Parsons. The senior forward had six points, two rebounds and a blocked shot as the Vikings went on a 19-8 run.
Â
Parsons' layin with 55 seconds left tied the game at 76-76. But Green's three-point answer just a few seconds later propelled NAU to victory.
Â
Northern Arizona shot 26-53 from the field (.491) and 23-32 at the line (.719). The Vikings forced 20 NAU turnovers converting them into 28 points, keeping them in the game.
Â
Deontae North scored 15 points off the bench for the Vikings.
Traylin Farris added 12 points but was limited to 14 minutes due to foul trouble.
Â
NAU won its first league game to go to 1-4. The Lumberjacks are 4-14 this season.
