Vikings' Youth Shows Itself at Wrong Moments in 4-3 Loss to Fresno State

BOX SCORE - PDF | HTML

HILLSBORO, Ore. —
A series of youthful mistakes in the second half cost the Portland State women's soccer team Friday, as the Vikings gave up four goals in the second half to lose, 4-3, to Fresno State after leading the Bulldogs 2-0 at halftime.

The Vikings (0-3-0) trailed the Bulldogs (1-3-0) for all of one minute, five seconds in the match, but that was all that mattered in the end as Fresno State's Myra Delgadillo scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute following a scramble in front of goal off a corner.

"That was a game we should've put away early in the second half after going up 2-0 in the first," PSU head coach Laura Schott said. "That is what we talked about at halftime. I said, 'Fresno will fight,' and I was not surprised when they did.

"Congrats to Krystal [de Ramos] and Morgan [Matthews} on their first goals of the year. We had great moments today, and some nice individual performances, but we gave up the result in pressure moments. Fresno was the more aggressive and decisive team. My hope is that our take away is victory is earned."

Fresno State twice came back from deficits in second half against the Vikings, as they erased a 2-0 halftime deficit with goals in the 52nd and 65th minutes from Peyton Cline and Julia Glaser, and then came back from a goal down again while scoring on a Portland State own goal in the 81t minute.

Fresno State then controlled the final stretch of play before Delgadillo's goal put the Bulldogs up for the first time in the match.

Fresno State's second-half comeback overshadowed what had been a breakout game for the Vikings' Krystal de Ramos, who scored both of the Vikings' goals in the first half.

De Ramos scored her first goal in the 8th minute of play, as teammates Kasey Isobe and Katie Forsee flicked on the ball to her with room to run. Forsee released de Ramos from the midfield line, and de Ramos controlled the ball until shooting from 12 yards out.

De Ramos scored again in the 37th minute, this time connecting with Aurora Bodenhamer on a counterattack. Bodenhamer jumped on a Fresno State pass in the Bulldogs' attacking third, and quickly sent a long ball up to de Ramos, who was able to run onto the ball past the Bulldogs' backline.

De Ramos' brace marked the first of her Portland State career, as well as the first since Bodenhamer scored two goals in the Vikings' 4-1 win over Idaho State on Oct. 9 last season.

Outside of de Ramos, sophomore Morgan Matthews scored the Vikings' third goal of the match in the 79th minute for her first goal of the season. Matthews scored two goals as a freshman last season, and now ranks second among active players in career goals with three, behind only Bodenhamer's career total of seven.

Forsee also made an instant impact for the Vikings' attack in the match, as she made her first start of the season after missing the team's first two matches due to injury. Forsee played 83 minutes in her return to the Vikings' lineup, and recorded the third assist of her career on de Ramos' first goal of the match.

The Vikings will hope de Ramos, Matthews and Forsee have more strong performances later in the weekend as they return to action Sunday on the road against Gonzaga. The Vikings and Zags kick off at 12 p.m. in Spokane, Wash.

Match Notes: The Vikings fall to 0-5-0 all-time against Fresno State with Friday's loss…Goalkeeper Ashton Blanskma played the full 90 minutes for the Vikings Friday, the first match this season in which any Viking goalkeeper has played the whole way…Delgadillo's goal at 88:55 is the eighth latest goal the Vikings have ever conceded in their Division I program history.
