Vikings Close Non-Conference Slate with Road Loss to Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose State ran away from the Portland State women's soccer team late in their match Sunday, as the Spartans scored a pair of goals after the 80th minute to hand the Vikings a 5-1 loss in their final non-conference match of the season.

Redshirt junior Breanne Chilton-Eddy scored just before halftime to bring the Vikings (2-6-0) within a goal at 2-1 at halftime, but the Spartans (3-2-3) pushed their advantage back to two goals in just the third minute of the second half, and then sealed the match with their two late goals.

"The game was tight and to San Jose's credit, they came out hard, they pressed us early and it was effective," PSU head coach Laura Schott said after the match. "Later in the game, I had to sit some of our key players due to game circumstances and San Jose was able to capitalize on that. Overall, we've been playing well and though this may have been a step back after much improvement, we'll step forward again as we turn to conference play."

The Vikings had been on a strong run of play before their match against San Jose State, including wins in their last two matches against Nevada and Colorado State. The Vikings beat Nevada 1-0 on the road last Sunday – the team's first road win in over a year – and then followed it up with a 2-0 win over Colorado State on Friday.

Sunday's match got away from the Vikings, though, after Chilton-Eddy's goal got them back in it. Chilton-Eddy's goal brought the Vikings back after San Jose State scored two early goals in the 8th and 27th minutes to go up 2-0.

Chilton-Eddy scored after heading down a free kick from redshirt junior Kristin Moyer, who launched a ball from midfield to Chilton-Eddy at the top of the box. Chilton-Eddy did well to control the long ball from Moyer, and made a quick turn on the shot to catch the San Jose State goalkeeper off guard.

The goal marked just the second goal in Chilton-Eddy's Portland State career, while Moyer recorded her first career assist on the play.

The Spartans quickly extended their lead again after Chilton-Eddy's goal, however, as Maricruz Chapa put the Spartans back in control just out of halftime with her goal in the 48th minute, and the Spartans controlled the flow of play after that. The Spartans held the Vikings to just three shots in the second half while recording 12 themselves, including the two that resulted in their pair of goals after the 80th minute.

Sunday's match excluded, the Vikings will take some momentum with them into Big Sky play next weekend, following their two recent wins against Nevada and Colorado State.

The Vikings open Big Sky play at Northern Arizona Friday, with a match at 7 p.m. (PT). The team will then travel to Southern Utah Sunday, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. (MT). The Vikings will battle elevation on the trip – the match at NAU Friday will be played at 7,000 feet while the match at Southern Utah Sunday will be played at 5,000 feet – but the Vikings played at 4,500 feet while beating Nevada during their non-conference schedule.

Match Notes: The Vikings fall to 0-5-0 all-time against San Jose State with Sunday's loss…Sunday's match is the Vikings' second loss on the back end of a home-and-away weekend, following a 5-2 road loss to Gonzaga on Sept. 4, after the Vikings played Fresno State at home on Sept. 2…The Vikings also played two home-and-away weekends last season, and lost on the road both times after winning their matches at home to start each weekend.
