Viking Alum Caressa Sims Takes 18th in Hammer at U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. — Caressa Sims, one of the Portland State track & field program's most decorated alums, placed 18th in the hammer at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field Wednesday.

Sims, who was competing unattached, placed 18th with a throw of 204-02 (62.23m) on her first attempt of the day. Sims also cracked 200 feet on her third attempt with a throw of 202-02 (61.62m).

Sims was competing for a spot in the finals of the event, which took place later in the day Wednesday, but did not finish among the top nine who advanced to the final.

Sims was a two-time Big Sky champion in the weight throw during her time as a Viking, as well as an All-Big Sky performer in the hammer. Additionally, Sims holds the Portland State records in the weight throw and hammer, both by significant margins. Her school record in the weight throw stands eight-feet clear of the No. 2 mark in the event, while her record in the hammer stands 20-feet clear of the No. 2 mark.

Sims returned to competition in 2015, after sitting out the entire 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons. Sims set a personal best of 218-11 (66.73m) at the Tucson Elite Classic in 2013, while her 2016 seasonal best was 212-01 (64.66m), again set at the Tucson Elite Classic, going into the trials.
