Celaya Homers, Vikings Fall to Hornets in Season Finale

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Vikings tied the game late on a three-run home run by senior Brianna Celaya but dropped their final game of the regular season, 6-5, Saturday afternoon to the Sacramento State Hornets in Sacramento, Calif.
 
Down 5-1 heading into the sixth inning, the Vikings plated four runs to tie the game at 5-5. Jenna Stanford drew a five-pitch pinch hit walk to lead off the inning before SheaLee Lindsey reentered the game to run at first.
 
Shae Nelson moved Lindsey to second on an infield single to third base before Ashley Smith moved both runners into scoring position with a groundout for the first out of the inning. Candice Orozco singled up the middle to score Lindsey from third and make it a 5-2 game.
 
Celaya took the first pitch she saw and hit it over the left field fence for a three-run shot, her fourth of the year, to tie the game at 5-5.
 
Sacramento State retook the lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-5.
                                                              
The Vikings could not mount another comeback in the top of the seventh, going in order, to fall by the final 6-5 score.
 
The Hornets took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run home run off Portland State starting pitcher Alyssa Burk.
 
Portland State scored its first run of the game with an RBI double down the right field line from Nelson to make it a 3-1 game. Sacramento State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up by the 5-1 score.
 
The Vikings tied it at 5-5 before giving up a run in the sixth to fall 6-5.
 
Meagan Hendrix earned the loss after allowing Sacramento State's go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. She allowed the one run on two hits over the final three innings of the game. She walked two and struck out three.
 
Sacramento State finished the regular season 26-20 overall and 15-6 in Big Sky Conference play. Portland State ends the regular season 14-33 and 7-14.
 
With the win, Sacramento State earned the No. 2 seed in next week's Big Sky Softball Championship, hosted by Weber State in Ogden, Utah May 12-14. The Vikings will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will face No. 3 Idaho State on Thursday, May 12 at 12 p.m. MT.
