Vikings Fall in Doubleheader to No. 6 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – The Vikings dropped a doubleheader to No. 6 Oregon Tuesday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. The Ducks took the first game of the day by a score of 7-1, before finishing the sweep with an 11-3 win in five innings in game two.

Junior OF SheaLee Lindsey improved her current hitting streak to six games with a hit in each game against Oregon. She is hitting .625 (10-for-16) with three runs scored and a double over the streak. The six-game hitting streak is the second longest this season by a Viking.

Senior IF Ashley Smith was the only other Viking to tally multiple hits over the two-game span. She went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Melissa Masters drove in two of the Vikings' four runs on the day with a pinch hit two-run double in game two.

Game 1 – Oregon 7, Portland State 1

The Vikings threatened in the top of the second with three singles in the inning to load the bases with one out. Unfortunately, a strikeout followed by a fielder's choice ended the scoring opportunity.

Oregon plated three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Ducks scored their first two runs on a bases loaded walk followed by a hit by pitch. Oregon then scored on a triple-steal after PSU starting pitcher Karyn Wright turned her back on the plate.

The Vikings got a run back in the top of the third on a RBI double by Kortney Craker. Lindsey singled to lead off the inning before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shae Nelson. Lindsey then came in from second on Craker's double to make it a 3-1 game.

The Ducks added a run on a sacrifice fly to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the third inning. Oregon added three runs in the bottom of the fifth off Meagan Hendrix, who came on in relief to start the inning, to take a 7-1 lead.

The Vikings managed a hit over the final two innings before falling by the final 7-1 margin.

Wright fell to 2-5 on the season with the loss. She allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits over four complete innings. She walked two, hit two, and struck out two.

Game 2 – Oregon 11, Portland State 3 (5 innings)

After the Vikings went in order to start game two, Oregon jumped out to an early lead with five runs, all earned, off PSU's game two starter, Kristen Crawford. Oregon then added four more runs off Crawford in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead and force Crawford from the game.

The Ducks added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 11-0 heading to the fifth.

Oregon starting pitcher Cheridan Hawkins held the Vikings to just one hit and one walk over the course of the first four innings before being lifted for another pitcher to start the fifth.

The Vikings plated three runs, two earned, off the relief pitcher on a RBI single by Jenna Stanford and a two-run double down the left field line by Masters to make it an 11-3 game with one out in the fifth.
