Vikings Cut Down 'Jacks, 88-80, for First Road Win

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Junior G Ashley Torres Negron scored a career-high 22 points leading the Vikings to their first road win of the season, 88-80, over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Wednesday night in Flagstaff, Ariz.
                                                      
Torres Negron scored her 22 points going 7-for-17 from the floor, including 3-for-9 from three-point range. She also went 5-for-7 at the line for her 11th double-digit scoring game of the season. She also pulled down three rebounds and tallied three assists. Torres Negron is averaging 18.0 points per game over the last two games.  
 
The Vikings had five players in double-figures for the second times this season. Along with Torres Negron's 22 points, freshman G Kian McNair scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from distance. She recorded a pair of steals to keep her consecutive games with a steal streak alive at 28 games.
 
Sophomore G Cici West posted her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She went 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 at the line. West is second in the Big Sky Conference in double-doubles, one behind NAU's Alyssa Rader. Rader finished the game with 20 points and six rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
 
Freshman G Corey James added 13 points, while sophomore G Yaremi Mejia added 11 points, both off the bench.
 
The Vikings put together their best shooting night of the season. Portland State shot a season-high .483 from the floor (28-for-58) and a season high .611 from three-point range (11-for-18). Their 11 three pointers are the second most in a game this season. They hit 12 three-pointers in their 83-77 win over CSUN in December.
 
Portland State started the game 4-for-4 from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers by Torres Negron to go up 8-2 early in the first quarter. James put the Vikings up seven, 15-8, following a pair of free throws later in the period. After NAU closed the gap to two points, PSU ended the quarter with a layup by west to lead 22-17.
 
Portland State shot 73-percent from the floor in the first, going 8-for-11 from the floor. McNair, Torres Negron, and West each scored six points in the quarter.
 
McNair and Michaela Kay hit back-to-back three-pointers to go up 28-20 early in the second quarter. The Vikings started the game 4-for-4 from three-point range. NAU went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 28-26, forcing a PSU timeout.
 
Torres Negron ended the run with an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Vikings up 31-28. The Lumberjacks tied the game at 31-31 before taking the lead, 40-38, with 1:45 left in the half. It was their first lead since the opening basket of the game.
 
Portland State ended the half on a 9-2 run, capped by a James three-pointer at the buzzer, to lead 47-42 at the break. The 47 first-half points were the third most by the Vikings this season.
 
Portland State shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half and 67 percent from distance.
 
Northern Arizona rattled off 10-straight points to open the second half to retake the lead at 52-47. James hit her second three-pointer of the game to pull within two before Kay tied the game at 52-52 with 7:14 left in the third.
 
Kay's second three-pointer of the game put the Vikings up 57-56 before five-straight points by McNair put the Vikings up 62-60 with 1:34 left in the period. The Vikings ended the third on a 10-0 run to lead 67-60 heading to the fourth.
 
After a slow start to the fourth quarter by both teams, Mejia put the Vikings up by 11, 77-66, with a three pointer at the 5:11 mark in the fourth.
 
The Lumberjacks cut the Vikings' lead all the way down to two points, 82-80, with 23 second remaining. The Vikings came up big at the line, going 6-for-6 at the line down the stretch, to secure the Vikings' first road win of the season, 88-80.
 
The win snapped a 21-game road losing streak by the Vikings, dating back to last season. It also moved the Vikings up to 10th in the Big Sky standings heading into the final game of the season.
 
The Vikings conclude the regular season Friday night in Cedar City, Utah against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. PT. Southern Utah fell to Sacramento State, 82-72, Wednesday night.
