HONOLULU, Hawaii – Timely hitting and another complete game from freshman
Alyssa Burk led the Vikings to a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in their Hawaii Invitational finale against Utah Valley.
Â
"All three phases of the game showed up today … pitching, defense, and timely hitting," Head Coach
Barb Sherwood said following the win. "It was a total team effort."
Â
The Vikings have now won three straight games and finish the Hawaii Invitational with a 4-1 record, their best non-conference tournament record since they went 5-0 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in 2006.
Â
Burk picked up her second straight win with another complete game. She allowed three earned runs over seven complete innings Sunday against Utah Valley. She allowed three hits, walked five, and struck out seven.
Â
On the weekend, Burk went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA after allowing just three earned runs over 14 innings pitched. She allowed five hits (.109 opponent batting average) and struck out 17 batters, including 10 Saturday against Hawaii.
Â
Sophomore
Kortney Craker extended her team-high hitting streak to seven games, going 1-for-1 with a pair of walks Sunday against the Wolverines. She drove in two runs with her third home run of the week.
Â
Craker ended the week hitting .615 (8-for-13) with five runs scored, a double, three home runs, and six RBIs. She slugged 1.385 with a .688 on base percentage.
Â
After striking out 10 batters Saturday against Hawaii, Burk picked up right were she left off Sunday against Utah Valley with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first inning.
Â
Craker plated the first two runs of the game with a two-run home run over the center field fence, driving in
Shae Nelson who walked two batters earlier, to put the Vikings up 2-0 at the end of the first.
Â
After a scoreless second inning, Utah Valley scored its first run of the game. Burk walked the bases loaded with two outs before a wild pitch allowed a run to score.
Â
The Wolverines tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the sixth after another walk came around to score on wild pitch by Burk.
Â
Candice Orozco, pinch hitting to lead off the bottom of the sixth, took a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for her first home run of the season, giving the Vikings a 3-2 lead.
Â
After a ground out,
Lexi Goranson singled to right field before stealing second.
SheaLee Lindsey then walked before
Celena Carrisosa moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
Â
Ashley Smith then walked to load the bases. Nelson singled through the left side with a chopper over the third baseman's head to drive in Goranson from third for an insurance run to put the Vikings up 4-2.
Â
The insurance run would come up big after a Utah Valley one-out home run off Burk to pull the Wolverines within one at 4-3. Burk struck out the next batter with a full-count called third strike for the second out of the inning. She then induced the next batter to foul out to Lindsey in left field for the game's final out.
Â
Burk improved to 2-1 on the season with the win after allowing just three runs on three hits over seven innings. She also struck out seven.
Â
Portland State improved to 4-11 overall, while Utah Valley fell to 4-11.
Â
The Vikings hit the road again next week for five games at the San Diego Classic I co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State. Portland State will take on Pittsburgh, San Diego, Illinois-Chicago, Grand Canyon, and San Diego State.
